WASHINGTON -- It's been a long time coming and now there's a sweepstakes to be among the first to ride Metro's new Silver Line.

"The opening day for Silver Line is Saturday, July 26," says Metro Spokesperson Dan Stessel.

There will be a ribbon cutting at the Wiehle Reston East Station at 10 a.m. that day.

"We're actually doing a sweepstakes to select 10 lucky winners to be aboard the first train," Stessel says.

The winners, chosen at random, will win two reserved seats on the first train and a Metrorail one-day pass for the inaugural day activities.

Members of the public who sign up for the chance to be among the first 10 riders will also become subscribers to Metro's Silver Line newsletter, which will provide regular updates on the new line's operations.

The first phase of the Silver Line runs 11 miles from Reston to East Falls Church and besides the Wiehle station includes four other stations -- Spring Hill, Greensboro, Tysons Corner and McLean.

"Those stations will all open at 11:30 on that Saturday, so you'll be able to go in tour the stations at a leisurely pace and wait for that first train at noon," Stessel says.

Metro's bitch slap to people inbetween pentagon to Alexandria is pretty epic. Theres no reason they cant run 40 trains per hour across the rosslyn tunnel by the way, they are just too cheap due to lack of funds to do so. So the blue line could return to as many as 15 per hour in that section if they had enough rolling stock/drivers.

First Silver Line Train to Depart Wiehle-Reston East Station

Metro plans to release a new SmarTrip card on July 26 to commemorate the opening of the Silver Line.

On opening day of the Silver Line, July 26, the McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro and Spring Hill stations will all open to the public at 11:30 a.m. so that riders can enter the stations to take a look around and purchase fare media, according to metro officials.

The Wiehle-Reston East station will open shortly before noon July 26, following an opening ceremony with regional officials and a ribbon cutting. Space will be limited at those events.
The first Silver Line train will depart Wiehle-Reston East, bound for Largo Town Center, at noon.

For people who want to be on that first train, it is expected to depart Spring Hill at approximately 12:08 p.m., Greensboro at 12:10 p.m., Tysons Corner at 12:12 p.m. and McLean at 12:14 p.m., on its way to Arlington, the District of Columbia and out to Largo, Md.
You can get to the Tyson's Corner and McLean stations before the start of Silver Line passenger service on opening day, by Metrobus:•Routes 3T and 23A will serve the McLean station – with the 3T connecting riders from East Falls Church and West Falls Church to the new McLean station, and the 23A connecting riders from Crystal City Metrorail station to McLean.
•Tysons Corner station will be served on opening day by Metrobus Routes 2T and 28A. Riders who want to get to Tysons Corner station can connect from Dunn Loring Metrorail station on the 2T bus, and from the King Street-Old Town station on the 28A.

The Fairfax Connector will provide additional bus connections to the new Silver Line stations, and the new 2,300-car parking garage at Wiehle-Reston East will be open. In addition, riders can access the stations on foot or bike. Check out the maps of the stations and surrounding areas to plan your route.

One week before the Silver Line’s opening, Fairfax County will host a ribbon cutting and transit fair at the Wiehle-Reston East North Entrance bus and parking facility — which includes a secure bike room, kiss & ride facility, and 10-bay bus terminal, in addition to parking.

The events are scheduled for Saturday July 19 from 10 am – 3 pm.

Metro plans to release a new SmarTrip card on July 26th to commemorate the opening of the Silver Line. The cards will be available in the five new Silver Line stations on opening day. They also will be available for purchase online and metro.

Who the fuck cares? I agree with the above. As soon as that bitch jumps its track (inevitable) and plunges into rush hour (8am to 7pm) traffic on Route 7, they'll be singing a different tune.

Who is this excited about riding public transit? Is there going to be a giant cake on the first day? Maybe a balloon drop and some door prizes? I don't get it.

Blessed are the murderous.

Hope they return the chosen riders back to the primate cage at the zoo as soon as the fun is all over.

It would be funny if first train had one or more "hot cars", and if at least one escalator was broken. At least that would show the riders that Metro is consistent.
