There will be not only be no outrage, but most will not be surprised by this. If someone told you the place was entirely nog run and managed, who would expect otherwise?

WASHINGTON (WJLA) — An audit of Metrorail garages revealed unsafe and dirty conditions over a 20-month period: conditions that included human feces, used condoms, bottles of urine, large amounts of trash and debris, broken glass, unsanitary elevators and overflowing trash cans.

According to WMATA's Office of Inspector General, the filth inside the garages was not cleaned daily as required by WMATA and stayed there for days, weeks, and even months. In fact, the OIG found contracted cleaning personnel were not performing their garage cleaning duties approximately 84 percent of the time.

"Someone's not doing their job and that's a problem," said Metro rider Jenn Berger, who frequently parks in the garage at the Glenmont Station in Silver Spring. "In the elevators and the stairwells particularly, it smells like people have gone to the bathroom in them."

WMATA's Office of Inspector General released a summary of its report on Monday.

The report summary also reveals that some contract employees weren't working their full eight-hour shift. The OIG blames a lack of oversight by WMATA and contractor officials, saying there was "little to no implementation of controls over the the garage cleaning process or the contract employee's time and attendance".

In total, the OIG said Metro spent over $2 million for contracted cleaning services that weren't performed over a two-year period.

"It just smelled like pee, it was pretty bad," said Metro rider Noelle Green. "I realize that people come in and out at all hours and you can't always control that, but it would be nice to not smell pee the whole way to the Metro station."
