Documenting Springfield Mall
Posted by: Dead Malls ()

I think that it will be interesting to take a periodic look at Springfield Mall's store roster. I have tried to not include seasonal kiosks (See's, Hickory Farms, Day by Day Calendar, etc.)

Here's an overview of the store closures and openings during the past couple of years. In subsequent posts, I'd like to see people post crime stats and noteworthy events. I will follow up with a more or less current store list and solicit comments on its accuracy.

Thanks for the information.

Interesting, as Aquatic Treasures Royal Koi dropped off of Springfield Mall's directory.

I'll have to look into this and update this thread.

If they're still open, I bet that they and tenants must feel great that the mall management isn't keeping potential shoppers up to date on what is actually available at the mall.

Another fact for this thread: Springfield Mall's web site doesn't reflect reality. My hunch is that this fact is telling.

Not sure of the name, but there's a fish store on the Food court wing, was there a couple of days ago. So it's still open.

Thank you for the great pictures, as they brought back so many good memories, especially from when Springfield Mall had something useful there. Now its just wannabe gang bangers, and no stores. That shooting from a few years back, effectively ended any chances of this mall coming back to "respectability." It is now going the Skyline Mall Route, and the Target will be the only thing left.

Truly though, thanks for the pics, they at least showed Time Out, where many tokens and much time was wasted. Although in a good way!

That shooting/murder outside Cerro Grande.

Plus:

The multiple stabbings.

The abduction which ended in a fatal car crash.

We've been evaluating our options. We even brought in an outside retail consulting agency. After extensive analysis, our best option appears to be to nuke the site from orbit. If we can take out greater Springfield as well, I think that the rest of the County will agree that it's a win-win.

Stay tuned. We'll have flyers.

Yes, I was surprised by that amount, too. Going into this, I figured that there were no more than 40 store remaining.

Somebody correct this figure if incorrect, but the Mall used to have 250 stores just a few years ago.

"It’s probably the most dangerous commercial ruin in the Chicago area"

I was wondering if it was because of crime or because the building is collapsing until I read this article:

A great headline over at Patch.com: "McKay: Springfield Mall is Safe for Shoppers"

http://annandale.patch.com/articles/mckay-springfield-mall-is-safe-for-shoppers

And a related article at: http://rosehill.patch.com/articles/springfield-mall-is-safe-for-shopping-district-supervisor-says#

Some great, inconsistent quotes from McKay:

"Right now, when people are in Springfield Mall, they’re scared because it’s so desolate."

"I think the biggest way to make people feel safer at the mall is to get people back to the mall, and the only way you’re going to do that is with a complete transformation. . . The mall has been through a few new coats of paint, and it doesn’t get people to come back."

“They have to recapture people who had bad experiences there in the past."

"Getting people back into the mall, mentally, just makes people feel safer. . . You feel like everybody is watching out for everyone else."

"Our police were at the table when they redesigned [the mall]."

"[ I ]t is eerie to be in there."

When a politician has to go to lengths to make it sound like a location is safe, yet stresses that police are helping to redesign the space and that attracting shoppers depends upon the illusion of mutually-ensured shopper security... you know you're being fed a line of b.s.

This is what you get when your board of supervisors invite illegals to overrun the county by offering them free/subsized luxury housing, free medical care, and free education, no questions asked.

Not just dead malls but also check when you go food shopping how certain things you used to find easy is now hard.

My advice is for everyone to start hoarding.

I bet 100% that a economic collaps is going to happen so fucking hard to the world and shit will go down and the rodney king beatig out rage will appear like the good ole days that we all wished we had.

Who to blame?
bankers and end time cults(evangelicals) and neocons and speculators.
There are people bettign and hoping for a major economic crash and that will be one of the motivating indicators of things to come.

Most of this started when evangelicals started voting in neocons into govt positions of the USA govt.

THe modus operandai starts with some verses of the Bible and they think the bible verses deal with American specifically with such passages like:

Your slaves will be your masters--not verbatim but close.

But economic collapse is what evangelicals want because they want to whore out USA because they still think USA is teh richest nation on earth and USA does not need all that money. So they want to screw over middle class by exporting jobs killing middle class tax base. Then by raising taxes and putting it on the shoulders of the rich and on companies since jobs were exported so now companies are pissed off at 30% tax rate and so they export the company so they do not have to pay those taxes so now USA is suffering a double whammy. GOVT and the rich dont care and still act like $1,200 a paycheck is dam good (typical greedy rich think that)

White Flint Mall is almost dead.

Some say White Flint Mall will close within 2-5 years but I think that
LakeForestMall is on par with White Flint Mall.

Would be nice just to have one major mall.
Only thing that would suck about that would be traffic and crime but more sexy booty comes around for the taking.

Very illuminating comments Chuck...all I know is that When Sarku closes, I'm gone...it was bad enough when Taco Bueno and Orange Julius closed. That hurt. And Farrells, and The American Cafe, for that matter...At least Mr. Le got a new job at the Mancuttery next to the Cowboy store...speaking of which how in God's name does that place stay in business? I think a lot of folks are sad cuz Springfield Mall was where we all went as youngsters back when it rocked. Now it's a rain-leaking ghost town full of brown people...and that was just yesterday.

Who remembers the short-lived skate park that used to be over next to the mall?

Sheehy Ford's been there since I got here in 83. The land where the apartments are at is where the driving lane was at, and a putt-putt. I don't think it was ever open during my time, but was definately closed by 86.

But they've been doing that for years, and still the place limps along. And some of the places are thriving. JC Penny just remodeled. Target seems to be doing fine. The Karate place seems well-attended. Stride Rite, Bath and Bodyworks, Hot Topic, Auntie Anne's, GNC, the salons, and Gamestop are all okay. Heck the barbershop moved after the slow death began, remodeling the old A&W site and they appear to be doing well.

So if the theory is starve 'em out, it's not working on everyone. And some are relocating so that they can perform better.

So what's the deal?

In other words an outdoor shopping plaza or strip center, but with a flashier facade?

Interesting to note in the map above, it is an orginal map from "Arlen of Virginia"....they owned Korvettes Department store (out of business 1980 and an early anchor at the Mall) now its owned by Vornado which started out as "Two Guys" another Discount store. What does this mean?

Basically the mall has been owned since the 80's by Carpetbaggers from New York, with no interest in anything other than the land appreciating.

Vornado went to the county and Springfield rpoper with alot of promises in exchange for favorable zoning and tax incentives....and they basically screwed everyone. It will sit as a hulk for the next 5 to 10 years......

At the recent DC Foo Fighters concert, local boy Dave Grohl made some choice comments about his recent visit to Springfield Mall:

"I went to my beloved Springfield Mall. That shit is fucked up right now! What the fuck? It's like that movie 28 Days [Later], it's so fucked. What happened to my beloved Springfield Mall... That shit is gone man."

"I went back to Springfield and it made me kind of sad sort of."

2002: Fatal gang shooting

2003: Two child abduction cases

2005: Carjacking, mall security fired upon, at least three gang stabbing incidents including one in the food court

1985: white boy scores some pills, a Judas Priest shirt, and a chick with feathered hair. He goes to Farrells for a sundae before hopping into his muscle car. Later he kicks some faggots ass.

Forever 21 and Spencers are both gone? Did anything take their place?

Has anyone eaten in the food court lately? I was there last month and the trays in use seriously look as though they haven't been cleaned in years.

Maybe it's old news, but a hair stylist at one of the salons said that all businesses (except for Target, JC Penney and Macy's) must close and vacate by June 30, 2012. It seems they're going to gut the mall or even tear down the inner spaces between the anchor stores. It's supposed to take two years.

The mall is so empty these days that gang members don't even hang out there any more.

Technically this is not a new hair salon but rather Kenese moved its location and renamed itself (new ownership I think)

When is Springfield, VA going to turn it's self into Springfield Towne Center? Heard not too long ago that more apartments, shops and other businesses will open...

What is the update? Is this really going to happen in the next 20 years?

They are waithing to see if the FBI HQ moves to the GSA warehouses. If they do , it is a game changer on what they want to do with the property, ie more offices, hotels vrs shopping. If they don't, back to abortion mill.

We used to ride dirt bikes where the mall was early 70,s I can see the steel going up in my minds eye. It was a huge exciteing place back then. I remember Montgomery Wards. JC Pennys is going down the drain, they have nothing in the stores like they used to back then. My favorite was the taco place by Wards, Taco Larado I think, I always had to stop there. Herman Atlas was there and they sold handguns back then and had lots of business it was once a great sporting goods store..Then in 73 the 3 day wait was started for handguns and they got rid of the handguns and went down the tubes. Funny how all the places that once sold guns have all gone out of business or are hanging on by their nails like Sports Authority.

Pizza Delight!
They had 2 locations within the mall.

I was actually in the Fairfax County Jail with one of the Owners who was waiting trial for the cocaine conspiracy. Mine was just driving on suspended...
