Should I move to Fairfax County
Posted by: Onehotbeeach ()
Date: June 11, 2012 10:11AM

Hi all. Just got a job offer (mid $100s) from a Defense Contractor in Fairfax County. Did a search a found this forum. From reading the posts on here, Fairfax County sounds like a pretty F'ed up place to live. From what I have read:

1) Traffic sucks! A there are a lot of very bad drivers with road rage in Fairfax County.

2) There is a big problem with illegal immigrants and gangs in Fairfax County

3) Elected officials don't care.

4) Housing and rent is outragously expensive.

5) People are generally mean and don't give a sh$t about anyone but themselves, so there is no feeling of community regardless of where you live.

So should I move to Fairfax County? My job would be based near Tyson Corner, but may require lots of work onsite at the Pentagon or Fort Belvior or Mark Center DoD offices according to my new boss.

Every city and the affleunt suburbs around it have that problem. Move to one of the Dakotas if you dont want traffic, illegals, and low rent.

Why don't you focus on the positives instead for a change:

1- You're being offered fukin' 150K - I doubt you could get that sort of cash in any other metro area short of NYC or SFO. How's the commute and the illegals in those places?

2- With that income (assuming you have some cash on hand for a down payment), you can pretty much choose exactly where to live to stay away from illegals/rednecks and still have a decent commuting situation; in-county, I'm thinking the nice parts of Oakton, Falls Church, Clifton; maybe a stretch for McLean/Great Falls. Pull up franklymls.com to see what you can afford. Almost any decent fereral contractor will have some telecommuting benefits, look into those to cut into your commute.

You only responded to 2 of his 5 points of worry.

Because there is no longer any sense of community, maybe back in the 80's before the metro went up, but ever since it has been declining. And no one takes responsibility for their children who they rarely parent.

Price of mortgage/rent-ridiculous! The house I grew up in cost $27,000, it sold in 2001 for $320,000, there was no was I could afford to raise my kids in the house I grew up in, even the same town. Speaking of Vienna, I barely even recognize it anymore, w/the houses on top of houses and all...

The gangs...read the paper, hell, read ffxu, it seems Ffx has an unpleasent number of gang related crime in the past 7/8years. Not everywhere, but, more than I'd like in a county I was moving to.

Don't know about how the elected officals feel, but I was born and raised in Vienna and I look forward to one day finding a town like Vienna USED to be, cause I'd never live there now.

Find an apt close to your job, and deal w/everyting you're worried about or suck it up and move out past Gainesville(Warrenton-Front Royal) and deal w/a 2 hour commute, but at least you'll have nice neighbors and quiet weekends..

You can't go home again. Even Front Royal is going down the tubes.
That's what happens when big money moves in and takes a dim view
of the locals. I used to hunt in the G. R. Thompson Wildlife
Management Area years ago and now even the surrounding areas on
the mountain have been developed. The newbies despise hunters and
anyone who wears camoflauge for that matter. I've told more than
one of them to move if they don't like it. They don't own the
Thompson and hunters pay for the upkeep. I've seen people actually
unloading horses off trailers in the parking lot and bitching up
a storm about how the hunters are interferring with their ride.
What the Hell do they expect? A parade in their honor?

I don't disagree that there are some shitty pockets in the county, but there are some pretty awesome places too. I can't think of many places in the US that have the potential to offer such a high standard of living - I say "potential" since it does require a lot of money. If your total household income is 150-200K, I'd say you can "have it all" - nice home, safe/good schools, nice community, exceptional cultural opportunities. With that income, you're not hob-knobbing in Great Falls but you/your family can definitely lead a happy and comfortable lifestyle. And the commute - well that's something most employers are willing to be flexible on through telecommuting and flexible hours.

People on this forum keep complaining about Fairfax County - but I strongly suspect those are the losers in Hybla Valley on a 50K income with 6 kids. Get educated, get a good job, have 1-2 children and let's see the complaints?

Agreed.

When you are young, it is an exciting place to be. By the time you get to be middle aged, it gets a little tiresome.

depends on whether you have a family and children who are going to school-if you are single, why not? you can endure and even enjoy living here, go to museums and appreciate wherever it is that you will be going from and to, if you have children in school-no way.

WTL - Well said.

Occupy - You just have to pick your (public) school carefully. There are many fine schools.

The biggest complaint around here is the traffic - always has been, always will be. Second biggest complaint - and much more recent - immigration. Research the demographics where you want to live.

If can, try to get into the hybla Valley area. This will be well for your commute and is the absolute BEST area to live if you are wealthy enough to afford. Beautiful community, great schools and wonderful people. Excellent quality of life here in Hybla Valley. The rest of Fairfaix sucks. Especially Mclean and Great Falls. Stay far away from those ghettos!

Really, do yourself and us a big favor and dont come here. We dont need anymore people coming here for their big salaries and then bitch about everything from traffic to teachers. It used to be those like you did it so they could include buying a house and turning around to sell it for 200K more than they bought it for. The good areas are starting to turn ghetto so you cant even count on that. There are plenty of other parts of the country with a much high quality of life rating.

I've worked in both areas and I'd say that the traffic is worse here. It's bad in both but at least there it moves and you don't get the 45 minute 5 mph Beltway/66 crawl for no apparent reason and it clears out faster. LA probably is worse but again at least it moves unless there's an accident. Boston absolutely sucked. It think that's the worst that I've had to sit through. And getting into Atlanta was a major pain when there's construction. Which, like here, was always.

Don't listen to anyone on this forum. We are all insanely biased about our home. And mostly negative bias, at that.
If you are getting a Gov't job, the best places to move are in VA. Maryland/DC are far more expensive/restrictive states.
That being said, if you plan on voting Democrat. Move to Maryland/DC and help make those places even worse than they are now.

Back on topic. Yes, Fairfax is a pretty cool place to live. I say that, of course, because I moved away and miss the convenience of the place. Yes, I said convenience a lot of people take for granted everything that is at their disposal. I'm currently living in a small place in Arizona and let me tell you I miss Fairfax every second! The people can be stuck up at times and the rent is overpriced but still it's not that bad of a place to live especially if you get a nice condo or town house within walking distance of somewhere. Traffic also blows but if I ever got the chance to move back, I would so do it in a heart beat!

I was in Florida for some time then returned back here. When I first got transferred I thought great Florida, sunshine, beaches and hot women. What a bunch of inbred hillbillies, ghetto types and red necks. It reminds me of central Mississippi with a beach.

Lots of bums and ex cons due to the warm weather, if you cant afford a place to live its easy to sleep in a park. I was glad to get back to Fairfax. I had a nice place down there, Gulf Coast, but damn there was some real trash folks in that state.

There is a definite disconnect between the type of people that post on FFXUNGRND and the people I live and work with. FFXUNGRND is utilized by a lot of societal misfits and losers as a complaint forum to air grievances and insult forum to vent neurotic hostility. You have to read through a lot of crap to find the useful information. After a awhile you can tell quickly what's legit and what's bs. I wouldn't base my decision on what I read here.

In a nutshell this is F___fax County:

1) The most obnoxious arrogant government in the USA. AHOLE GOVERNMENT
2) Loaded with swarthy illegals, poorly-bred IT millenials, self-important asses.
3) Horrible quality of life, extremely low "overall" value.
4) Agenda 21 central, California East... discusting mass demographic profile.
5) Nasty dirty communist politicians such as Bulova, Connelly, Hudgins. Plum.
6) Toll booths scheduled for every driveway, Highways are parking lots.
7) Super Loud Firetrucks, ambulances copcars with surveillance cameras EVERYWHERE.
8) Middle Easterners and whatever you think of them EVERYWHERE.
9) 19 of 20 vermins in COSTCO don't look act or think like you do.
10) Virginia is a bad Government, Fairfax is Ahole Government Central.
11) Great place until about 2001, Loaded up the truck and just moved-out. It's a
horrible county, horrible people, horrible polititians.Illegals welcome MS13 welcome... Scumball Democrats EVERYWHERE. Doesnt matter what your income is if they tax and take it all back and you are miserable. Roads really suck, potholes EVERYWHERE, confiscatory obnoxious government. Place is Ellis Island 2 but the immigrants now are some of the world's least desirable vermin. Discusting County, Schools and hospitals loaded with free-loading illegal slimes. In conclusion: Fairfax County is one big DMV line on the wrong side of town. If you come, note you have been properly warned. Fairfax County Board of Stupidvisors all belong IN JAIL for Treason
