Decent Fried Chicken?
Posted by: F The Colonel ()

Tired of hearing about who has the best pizza in Fairfax County; where's a good place to get fried chicken? Real fried chicken, not KFC, Popeye's or Bojangles. Preferably with good sides. The Black Eyed Pea was decent for that type of food, but now the Herndon ones is an Indian place, Falls Church is an "El Tio Tex-Mex Grill", and Arlington is the Melting Pot (I think). I'd say non-chain southern/soul food, but not just greasy crap or chicken and waffles. Though a good chicken and waffles recommendation would be welcome as well. I don't even mind Cracker Barrel, but it's way the hell out in Manassas.

Dude! Crack chicken is where its at. Dont believe me? Just search crack chicken on google. The first time I tried crack chicken for lunch it was so good I went back after work to get more for dinner. People at the Arlington crack chicken form a line everyday waiting for them to open. There is also a crack chicken in hoodbridge but I have never been there.

the real name of the place is pollo rico but everyone calls it crack chicken.

El Pollo Rico is great.

They don't serve fried chicken though.

Neither does The Melting Pot, lol.

Flavors Chicken on Columbia Pike. Real soul food. Pretty good. Used to be owned by former NFL star and Jeb Stuart alum Charlie Garner, but I think there's a new owner. Either way its pretty good.

I went to Flavors Soul Food to try their chicken. Basically just deep fried 1/4 chicken done in a French fryer (so it seems), nothing too special, but still a little different and rare considering most fare around NOVA. The soul food sides (collard greens and Mac & cheese) were better. The corn bread is a sweet style, not the type I grew up with and hoped to have. They have one tea dispenser, which is unlabeled and diabetic SWEET.

Good cornbread is hard to find. In my opinion, it should be coarse, not sweet at all, and crispy/crunchy on the outsides from the cast iron skillet.

I like Peruvian/South American chicken (Crisp and Juicy, Super Chicken, the one in Herndon), and often the sides are good too, but they're a different genre than fried chicken and southern sides. Super Chicken has the real charcoal fire, and spicy rice, but it also takes forever.

Flavors has better ribs and side dishes.

Pollo Campero ain't so hot, they almost fry/burn it to a crisp. I'll take anyone of those Peruvian/Bolivian places instead.

Peruvian Chicken is the new trend.

There's a place in the Herndon/Reston Home Depot plaza that has a lot of traffic whenever I go there.

I haven't had a bad one.. Same recipe every place. You really would have to be an a-hole to fuck it up.

Believe it or not, Walmart fried chicken is pretty good! Like 6.88 for an 8 piece. Not bad!

Totally have to agree with Popeyes being one of the best. Even Tom Seitsma has publicly stated that he eats Popeyes a few times a year because of their spicy chicken.

Crisp and Juicy and Super Pollo are greasy and nasty. Edy's is the best. Falvorful and you don't get the fatty nastiness under the skin like Crisp and Nasty. Be careful of recommendations--some people grew up on Micky Ds and think Firehouse subs are good. People raised on mom's gourmet cooking have a more discernable pallete.

Drive by a bojangles and park and observe the cars in the line.....
If 99% of the cars have 22” wheels, get in line.

If 33% of the cars have a Landau top, get in line.

Calculate oversized black T-shirt to ‘do rag ratio.....
