Why the left’s belief in a Swedish ‘utopia’ is based on a lie
“In the 1930s, one of the first things the welfare state organized was housing,” Asbrink told The Post. “These were tax-paid flats, and the state wanted to control the inhabitants. So they had inspectors and actually sent them into people’s homes.”
The government issued extensive, exacting rules of conduct, cleanliness and behavior for its agents to enforce.
“The residents had to open the windows at certain times of the day. Everyone had to take a bath once a week,” Asbrink said. “And they were required to take their shoes off indoors.”
Anyone who refused to comply could be evicted.
That quirky facet of everyday Swedish life “did not rise naturally from the people at all,” Asbrink said. “It came from the state wanting to train them.”
It’s a telling glimpse of the regimentation and conformity lurking beneath the shiny surface of Sweden’s apparent utopia, a society that represents the highest hopes of the American left.

The elderly turn to the state rather than their adult offspring for support.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, that translated into some of the developed world’s highest suicide rates and had a noticeable impact on Sweden’s artists.

While speaking at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, the center-right Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was aware "that some people in the U.S. associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism."
"Therefore," he said, "I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."
Rasmussen acknowledged that "the Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens," but he also noted that it is "a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish."
To that we'll add that Sweden, another of Sanders' inspirations, has for decades quietly moved away from its cradle-to-grave form of government welfare. And the Swedes are better off for having done so, just as the Danes will continue to be better off as their government overhauls its welfare state.
If Sanders is going to continue to use these nations to guide his governing philosophy, he should base his policy positions on what they really are, not what he thinks they are or wants them to be. These countries have learned a harsh lesson. They don't deserve to be Berned again.

The Venezuelan economy and the standard of living for the average citizen declined significantly under Chavez. Venezuela went from a creditor nation to a debtor nation and its people paid the price. Chavez kept his life style intact at the expense of the average citizen. Certainly NOT a model to embrace or follow.

As you said, oil prices fluctuate. Chavez's failure to invest in and maintain the oil refineries after he nationalized them caused production to fall to about 1/2 of what it was before. That loss of revenue created a downward spiral throughout the Venezuelan economy that made it especially vulnerable to routine market price fluctuations. Since those fluctuations were normal and forseeable, a proper economic system would have made allowances for them. The US is/was not the problem. A socialist dictator following socialist policies is the villain.

One of the patterns I’ve noticed about this site is that whenever someone posts about socialism and it’s inherent “evils” it really scares the shit out of the old foggies who don’t seem to realize we no longer experience there dad’s economy where a person can get a job right out of college, stick with that employer for 40 years, then retire with a nice pension. Their allergic reaction to the term only convinces me it’s something we should try.

One of the patterns I’ve noticed about this site is that whenever someone posts about socialism and it’s inherent “goods” it's obvious that it's a 20-something kid who doesn’t really know socialism is, has no memory of the practical realities and its many failures, and just wants some shit that some unrealistic hold-over hippies told them would be "free." Their naive reaction to the term only convinces me that they're young and dumb and in most all cases will grow out of it and laugh at the next generation of idiots who babble about socialism.

And USPS is an independent entity as well which operates with a charter from the government and receives no tax money. As are various other public entities which are not 'socialism.'

Studies show it doesn’t matter what you majored in. Christ, I got a bachelors in interdisciplinary studies and got a job in IT management making $100K. I didn’t know dick about computers either. If you can't get a good job these days and around here, then that's on you.
Other than government and a few very large organizations (and rare then), people haven't been working for 40 years in the same job and retiring with a pension since probably the mid-90s when every company actually paying for it (vs government paying with fantasy money) realized that it was an unsustainable model. That's nothing new.
