FCPS discounted parking passes for those receiving Free/reduced lunch

If parent(s) can't afford to feed your child lunch, and hence receive free/reduced meals at school on the taxpayer dime, your child should not need to get a parking pass at a discounted rate! If the parent can afford a vehicle for a child to drive to school, when school buses are provided (!), they should no longer be receiving free/reduced lunches courtesy of the tax payer. This is ridiculous!

That’s a really good point. There is a point to be made in that the bus schedules, even the late buses, do not coincide with the times of after school activities. Band is a class with after-school rehearsals that are mandatory, for example. Rehearsals that run until like 5:30 pm. There aren’t any buses at that time.
But, if you can afford a (probably) second, or even third car that sits at school all day, you can probably spend a few dollars to feed your child.

Poor kids are just as smart as white kids but they don’t have to pay the 50 dollar laptop fee.

Ridiculous, yes.
All kids should be provided a free healthy breakfast and lunch as well as free parking. Our schools turn the vast majority of these kids into lifetime taxpayers. The return on our investment is incredible. Education costs nothing, it pays and pays and pays.

I foresee a future where underpriviledged kids will be getting a monthly stipend to attend school, in addition to all the freebies they currently get. When my daughter was in elementary school they used to have food drives for the needy. They conveniently left out the fact that they were sending all that food home with students to feed their families over the weekend and not contributing it to local food banks. Very dishonest of the school administration. I do not even know if it was approved/sanctioned by Gatehouse.

Some of it might have gone home with the teachers. Some of them have Sticky Finger Entitlement syndrome.

I know a number of lawyers that are willing to challenge this fee. None of them are willing to do it on their dime. So far no client has stepped forward willing to pay a lawyer a reasonable fee for mounting the challenge.

Reminds me of when they made the parents pay the fee for the AP exams that were the mandatory final exam and we all got refunds. Somebody raised a stink because of course you can’t charge a fee for a frigging final exam.

Sounds like the tech fee is a rental/user fee and that is their way around this.

Not hearing much about this?

https://woodburnes.fcps.edu/resources/technology/bring-your-own-device-byod

Fairfax County Public Schools encourages students to bring their personally-owned computing devices to school for use in the classroom as an instructional tool. Approved personally-owned computing devices include laptops, tablets (such as an iPad or Kindle Fire) and e-readers (Kindle, Nook, etc.) that have Wi-Fi capability. These devices can enhance the instructional program, and will allow students to use such devices, with teacher permission, in the classroom. We do not allow the use of smartphones at Woodburn.

Students are responsible for the security of the device. Teachers and other staff will not store or hold onto devices. School technology support or teachers will not support, repair or troubleshoot student devices.

Students should fully charge the device prior to bringing it to school as the school is not responsible to provide an opportunity or the necessary power to charge the device during the school day.

Students should only bring personal devices for a specific use in classes where the teacher has permitted them. Devices are not to be used in open areas (hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms, or the playground).

To use their device in school, students need to bring their device to the tech office so a member of the Tech Team can access the FCPSonboard Network. Devices that were connected last year must be reconnected this year.

Parents need to sign the SR&R (Student Rights and Responsibilities). This was sent home in September. There is a section on BYOD ( Bring Your Own Device) in Appendix A of the SR&R. If you already signed and returned the SR&R, you do not need to complete any additional paperwork.

This is an excerpt from Appendix A:

Personally own computing/network devices BYOD:

Students using personally own electronic devices must follow the policy stated in this document while on school property, attending school-sponsored activities, or using the FCPS network.
Students using a personally own device with a wireless network are only permitted to connect to the FCPS Wi-Fi network (not private cellular service) while on FCPS property.
No device placed on the FCPS network will have software that monitors, analyzes, or may cause disruption to the FCPS network.
FCPS is not responsible for any device data loss, theft, damage or other associated costs of replacement or repair as a result of a student participating in the BYOD initiative.
FCPS staff will not be responsible to store, support, or troubleshoot a student owned device.
Students will take for responsibility for any personally own device and will appropriately secure all devices when not in use.
Activities on the FCPS network may be subject to discovery under the freedom of information act (FOIA). FCPS reserves the right to monitor and investigate all devices and activities on the FCPS network. The device may also be confiscated by school authorities in accordance with the student rights and responsibilities (SR&R) document.
Devices that are not used appropriately are subject to confiscation and will be returned to the parent.

We hope that you will take advantage of this special opportunity!

Is this true? FCPS students who qualify for FRMS ALSO get reduced or free parking? Let's add this to the list of FARMS Swag!

Free and reduced price meals aren't vetted. Sign your kid up today! Really - a ton of free stuff will instantly be available for your student! Activity fee? Waived! P.E. uniform? Here are two sets! You probably aren't able to do laundry in your ghetto apartment, so we'll wash your uniforms for you!

Don't bother buying school supplies! The school will SUPPLY once you are on "the list." In fact, the box of supplies are already in your kid's classroom. Field trips? Free! Field trip involving something that you might have to buy, like a t-shirt or long pants? Done! The PTA will buy all for you.

Enjoy our summer reading program, too. You will receive free books via a free backpack filled with free food to share with your family. Also, please show up at our barbecue we hold at the school and bring the family. Yes, it's free.

Oh, you can cancel your dentist and doctor appointments. The school will send you to the health department clinic for free immunizations, free dental care, school physical.

See? Your life is already easier! You'll also get holiday gifts! Free, new jackets! Look for a letter in the mail advising what day to come to the school to get your huge bag of presents.

Pro tip: pregnant teen? Homeless? Well, you're golden! Programs abound for you. Even better if you require language interpreters. Well give you that, too.

Also, wink, wink this is all 100 % confidential. We don't share this list, of course. All of these programs are quietly and discretely administered! But for fun, go ahead and ask your kindergarten kid who gets backpack food on Fridays! There's your answer.

I have said this before. If you don't like the direction the current School Board is headed, then run for office yourself or support candidates whose positions you believe in or can live with, but most importantly VOTE. It takes pathetically few votes to win a school board seat in this county. We have the School Board we have because most people do not vote in school board elections.

The goal of FARMs is to assure that all kids have access to nutritious meals. Doesn’t really seem like all that radical of an agenda.

Most people don't oppose free and reduced lunches. All school lunches are Federally subsidized and the County makes more total money from meals provided free than they do from kids who pay. The more frequent gripe with F&RL is qualifying for them also entitles kids to a basket of other goodies that other families have to pay for. In other words we offer a free education to some but not to others.

There are many means-tested programs. Those who qualify for any of them should take advantage of the benefits they are eligible for. Whiners like you should simply be disregarded.

So what part of "Free Public Education" do you not understand? It isn't supposed to be free just for the poor. It is supposed to be free for every kid residing in the County whose parents choose to take advantage of it, and who hasn't forfeited that right because of behavior.

The government has a number of means-tested programs. No problems with that. When it comes to public education though, it should be the same for all.

The education is free except they can charge you for “consumables” like writing materials, uniform and instrument rentals and purchases, etc. And the FRM kids get a break on those.

Remember, don't vote for any progressive "equity" touting, commie socialist, LGBTQIAPKBBQ+ celebrating board candidate who wants to just brainwash kids minds, and just ignores the real problems in the district.

Tired of the members using my dime in taxes to do nationwide party politicking.

You aren't paying that $12k because your kids are in school. You are paying it because you own real estate in the County. There is no direct tie between the obligation to pay taxes and the right to send your kids to school here. A large number of Fairfax County residents are parents whose kids attend Fairfax County schools, yet those parents pay no real or personal property taxes to the county. Many of those parents are in the military.

Fed throws in additional money for the military parents. There is an annual survey to capture this.

That is part of the problem. Stop sucking off the tit of the Federal Government for issues that should/can be handled on a local level. Fairfax County Public Schools has PLENTY of money to work with. They have just gotten lazy about figuring out how to do it responsibly.

They are terrible money managers. They sure are good at planning catered meals, though, as well as continuing Ed trips and fancy dinners. They are greedy bastards. If they spent less time eating and traveling on the public dollar maybe they could concentrate more on managing the money they are entrusted with a little better.

FCPS gets Fed money for military in housing to offset the missing property taxes, as well as foreign military, and other situations involving Federal property in Virginia. It’s the Impact Form 57 everybody fills out at the beginning of the school year. They get like 3 million out of it.
