WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton's family was "dead broke" and saddled with legal bills when she and her husband left the White House, the former first lady said in an interview that aired Monday.

Republicans immediately seized on the comment and said it demonstrated that Clinton, the Democratic Party's strongest contender for its 2016 presidential nomination, was out of touch.

"We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt," Clinton told ABC News. "We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea's education. You know, it was not easy."

Since leaving the White House, former President Bill Clinton earned a fortune in speaking fees and Hillary Rodham Clinton represented New York in the Senate.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate financial disclosure forms, filed for 2000, show assets between $781,000 and almost $1.8 million. The forms allow senators to report assets in broad ranges.

The same form, however, shows the Clintons owed between $2.3 million and $10.6 million in legal fees to four firms. Again, the forms allow senators to report debts in broad ranges.

The Clintons paid off their legal bills by 2004, according to Senate disclosure forms. And by 2009, when Hillary Rodham Clinton was preparing to join President Barack Obama's administration as secretary of state, the Clintons' wealth was somewhere between $10 million and $50 million.

Republicans quickly pounced.

"How out of touch is Hillary Clinton when 'dead broke' = mansions & massive speaking fees?" tweeted Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus.

Democrats leveled a similar charge against the GOP's wealthy 2012 presidential nominee, Mitt Romney.

She worked on Nelson Rockefeller's presidential campaign, and she attended the 1968 Republican National Convention. Whatever.

I recall expressions of concern from both parties when Reagan went to Japan. But saying that "the Democrats went apoplectic, shaking with rage" is hyperbolic. Moreover, part of the concern was the payment was a quid pro quo for having gone easy on Japan in trade negotiations. (Reagan was responsible for the voluntary export restraints that hammered American car buyers and enriched Japanese auto companies.)

As for Clinton, I am not aware that he ever got anything near $2,000,000 for two speeches. (And $2,000,000 was real money back in 1989.) Reagan opened the door, and W and Clinton walked through.

I don't think he was making it up, just not willing to take the time to fact check the details. If she wasn't radicalized until college, that is in-keeping with when most kids get radicalized. Perhaps the poster could have said "her whole adult life" but the significance of that is questionable. The difference between 19 and 22 isn't significant (other than 19 is still a "teenager" and therefore, more salacious) when it comes to a US president hitting on a young college aged intern.

I do not particularly dislike Hillary Clinton, but your response comes off as nick-picky and a feeble attempt to obfuscate the big issues by pointing out insignificant details.

Bottom line, Hillary is in the pocket of Wall Street, just like Obama and Bush and Bill are. Putting Hillary in the White House is just a continuation of the royal oligarchy that is running this country.

That $100 mill was after the fact, so, that has nothing to do with the struggles they had in office.

However I do agree, the book has sunk faster than the titanic. People just aren't thinking about politics in the summer time while they struggle to eat.

I will say this...if she decides to run she will probably win, though my personal opinion is we need to get rid of government. As Gene Simmons said, "the government cant even manage themselves and they want to manage us".

We need a new political system we need to be able audit the treasury, good, bad, or, indifferent. How much real cash do we have in reserves or are we just printing worthless money. Checks and Balances we need desperately. How much does the government wastefully spend and can we really cut programs out to make it a more balanced system. Probably. Why dont we? Too much red tape. Why isnt there a flat tax? Is it so tax attorneys and accountants get paid?
