A Rachel Carson Middle School drama teacher, Josh Bickford, took 12-13 year olds to a LGTB promoting musical for a drama field trip. The musical centers around a young lesbian girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the high school prom. Regardless of your stance on the LGTB issue, phrases specifically used in the musical include "masturbation," "lose virginity," and the f word numerous times, which are inappropriate for a school sponsored trip. This is the second time he has taken students to see this musical. Along with seeing this musical, students in drama club also saw the musical "Kinkyboots" last year, which centers around a boy influenced by a transvestite to make erotic boots. I love musicals myself, but aren't there other musicals to take young, impressionable, hormone filled students to? On another note, who is approving these field trips? This is a classic case of a teacher promoting his/her values. I guarantee if I wanted to get more Bible believing values in front of students, I would be denied unlike all the other liberal propaganda used in public schools.

You had to sign a permission form in order for your child to go to this. The principal had to approve the trip before the permission forms were sent out. Did you investigate the show? Did the principal investigate it? Did they discuss the nature of the show when it was presented? They should have. Do NOT trust these people. They are brainwashing your children in more ways than you know.

This is nothing new. School drama programs were taking kids to NYC to see plays back in the FCPS glory days, which was also when Time Square was at its worst. Some parents thought the kids going on out of town trips was not appropriate. Some parents thought having their kids exposed to Time Square was inappropriate. Some parents objected to the plays. Those parents had the option of saying their kid was not allowed to go.

This situation is no different. Research what it is your kid is going to see. If you find it inappropriate then say no.

My child did not go on the trip. I never would approve of such totally inappropriate content for preteen and teenagers. He heard about it when the other students returned and discussed it. I then investigated the plot and songs of the musical, and was speechless that this was approved as a school sponsored trip for 12 and 13 year olds. That's when I decided to post somewhere to make it public as just one way of holding the school accountable. The principal had to approve the trip because they went on the trip. Otherwise the trip would have been shut down before it began.

Agreed it is the parents' job. I am actually shocked that any parent agreed to this. It is the school's job to select age appropriate field trips.

What is age appropriate for a 12 to 13 year old. Not a rhetorical question. What I might find acceptable for a 12 year old another parent might find unacceptable for her college age kid. What some might think is OK for their 10 year old I might think is pornography.

Sex, nudity, alternative lifestyles, vulgar language, graphic violence. These are things that some parents object to. They are things that surround our children so that many children are regularly exposed to them. Many parents find it acceptable or even healthy to expose their kids to them. There is no longer a common standard. The likelihood of finding something that isn't objectionable to someone is doubtful, and if you do find it it would probably be not worth doing.

I have no idea what this play is. I have seen Kinky Boots. I wasn't a fan but did not find it objectionable. How are you on Victor Victoria?

At what point do you draw the line? I mean you say that kids are exposed to this graphic violence and alternative lifestyles already, so could a movie production class in FCPS take their students to see Fifty Shades of Grey or a John Wick movie about using guns to kill people (I'm pro 2nd amendment by the way)? After all, aren't kids already exposed to sex and guns? I wrote this post to make people aware of what kids are being exposed to in public schools. I'm not against exposure to material I disagree with, but if cable tv and the entertainment industry are held to some standards as to what is deemed acceptable to hear or see, shouldn't our schools be as well?

Opt your kid out if you want to. You have no more power than that.

FCPS Parent: You have stated this teacher has taken kids to see this play twice, so it is likely a play we can find information on. Yet you chose not to state the play's name. It's fairly difficult to say whether a play crosses the line if you don't know what it is. The factors you listed, LGBT themes, references to masturbation, to losing virginity and the occasional use of the word fuck do not IMO cross the line for 12-13 year old kids in general. Whether they cross the line for your kid is another matter. In deciding whether it is appropriate for the class the standard is not whether some parents might object, but whether most parents whose children were invited to go would object. It seems your kid wasn't even invited, so your opinion is of no greater weight than mine it.

I did forget to mention the play. The play is called "The Prom." As for my regardless of the LGTB comment, that is my biggest concern. However, there are other sexual comments and numerous uses of the F word that don't need to be a part of a school sanctioned field trip.

As to Bible stuff in high school: Just go to a chorus concert or hang around during any "Winter" concert. In addition, there are numerous clubs and in some schools Bible study before and after school.

As to the swear words, the use of masturbation, and lose virginity - again, this may not be in your comfort zone. My 13 year-old 8th graders had heard a lot more than that in school from other kids and it did not turn them bad or evil or promiscuous. Same with some of the novels they have read in and out of school, and the movies they have seen in and out of school. My kids are strong enough in what they believe and who they are that the musical will not change that. Others may not be - so that is why parents can opt out.

Finally, instead of posting here, why not go and ask Josh Bickford if he has an agenda? Ask him and see what he believes.
