A father is in custody, now charged in the death of his 3-month-old boy last August, according to the Prince William County Police.
David Michael Schmidt, 28, of the 14900 block of Keavy Place in Haymarket, is charged with murder and felony child abuse
Officers responded to the home on the afternoon of Aug. 5 regarding an unconscious child, Rhys Schmidt. David Schmidt had phoned police and said the boy was not breathing.
"The child was flown to an area hospital where it was discovered that he had sustained injuries consistent with being shaken," according to police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok.
Rhys Schmidt died on Aug. 17 as a result of his injuries.
An investigation by the homicide and physical abuse units led to David Schmidt's arrest Thursday. He is being held without bond.
