* Have cell phone fully charged and back up battery or back up power unit such as this

* Set fridge and freezer to most cold settings. Some units like mine, inside door above top shelf, 5 is where you normally keep at it, 9 is coldest. Buys you some more time if power goes out. Don't leave at coldest setting for extended number of days. Also fridges can vary how can do these settings (best to check user manual for manufacturer recommendations).
* Set your heating unit thermostat up a couple or few degrees. Home stays warm enough a little longer if power goes out.
* Have a shovel and inside where you can get to it easily. Living in an apartment, you would not believe how many people do not have a shovel to clear snow away from their car. Yes, I have seen people just trying to do it with their hands.
