Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Charley was a older black man with a smile always on his face, he lived at the bottom of the hill on Picket Rd somewhere by the bend where the City of Fairfax's work crews are still at. The city got him a little trailer and he lived in that right by the road entrance to the city compound. he would sit and smile and wave at everyone that passed
The Mayor of Fairfax City, the original Silverthorne spoke well of Charley but laughingly said he never knew Charley to have a job or work. I don't think he was joking either.
I went to CCD (Sunday school for Catholics) at St. Mary's back then. We met at Robinson Secondary, before the current church was built on Sideburns Road.
Anyway, part of our obligation was to help people in need. One Sunday, a group of us visited him and took him food and other things. We sat in his trailer and talked for a while. He was very nice.
I miss the old days when people just talked and helped each other.
There used to be an old man in a little house in Middleburg that used to sit on his porch and wave and smile at everyone who drove past. His house was at the intersection of Sam Fred and Rt. 50, just east of town. This was the early 2000's. Wonder if it was the same gentleman, maybe he moved? My daughter always looked forward to passing this spot and waving happily back to him.
Charley had a disability and he owned property in Fairfax City. The city took the property by eminent domain and the city provided Charley the trailer to live in. He was indeed a happy smiling man and lots of people enjoyed his wave and returned the same to Charley. He also served as a free watchman over the city compound.
The older black man in the trailer on Pickett Road near the bottom of speed trap hill . Always a smile and a wave you made many of our days happier as we waved back RIP "Charley"
