HOA complaints

We just got a letter at a door saying our backyard garden needs to be taken down or we will get fined? Any other ridiculous HOA complaints?

Weren't you aware of the HOA covenants when you bought or rented? If the letter is right according to the rules, then you are wrong. If it is wrong, tell them to pack sand.

Personally, I would never buy or rent some place with an HOA. Problem: solved.

HOAs are nonsense unless rules are enforced for everyone. You should not be able to get waivers, except rarely, and not because you joined the Board to approve an addition onto your house that doesn't belong or do favors for friends. We had a great guy who was the HOA's approver of deviations/exceptions who did a great job, but everyone complained because he was strict. Now he's gone (moved to happier place), and the neighborhood looks like a dump.

Glad you finally got the letter. We've all been looking at that fucking eyesore for the last several years taking turns arguing who was going to burn it down while you were away.
