If you're contributing steadily into an IRA or 401k over many years, then you're more or less auto-balancing. And sending money in when the markets are low out of panic isn't a bad thing at all. You're buying stocks on sale.

Now, if you have $50k in cash, and are wondering where to play it, because you want it to be $60k in 2 to 3 years??? I couldn't tell you. Investors need to reasonably predict the future and Trump makes the future somewhat unpredictable. A tariff out of the blue can sandbag what otherwise might be a savvy investment.

Real estate maybe? Go in on a condo while the rates are low, fix up, and rent out.

I wouldnt invest in real estate right before a recession and I certainly would not invest in real estate looking for a return in 2-3 years. Rates will continue to go up and that will drive real estate appreciation down. Maybe speculate in the Arlington area because Amazon but its not a certain thing. Bond rates are rising so they are definitely a safe bet.

Gold is overvalued, commodities are uncertain because of US trade policy. I plan to hold my stocks and my real estate. The Tax Giveaway will make stocks a safe bet until 2020 when we have to increase revenue and raise taxes.

Stocks went up yesterday Trump decided to do something Presidential by visiting the troops in Iraq, and outlined a rationale for a Syria withdrawal of greater length than a tweet.

That and record Holiday sales from Amazon didn't hurt. If he ended the trade wars and let the government start up again, you'd see another couple record positive days.
