I almost didnt bother watching. Im glad I did as it was a really good defensive game. honestly it could have gone either way but the Rangers where one Green penalty better. Congrats to the Rangers. Caps are a great team too.

There is no curse. There is only one expectation. This team is just not very good...and never has been.
In the 80's, they had rock solid defense, average goaltending and no goal scoring.
In the 90's, they had rock solid goaltending, average defense and no goal scoring beyond Petr Bondra.
In the Ovechkin era...they can't figure out what they are. Because of all the coaching changes, they've had periods of being an offensive juggernaut (Boudreau), periods of being a defensive juggernaut (Oates and Hunter) and now with Trotz a period of balance. But, they're still...not...good enough.
To win the Cup, you need primary scoring AND secondary scoring. You need defensemen who can move the puck AND defensemen who can clear out the crease. You need elite goaltending and you need to carry a bag of knuckles in both the offensive zone crease AND the defensive zone crease.
In 40 years of hockey, the Caps have NEVER had all of those things ALL at the same time. Until they do, they won't win a Cup.

Yup...another not so shocking heartbreaker. Good teams find ways to win and the Caps always find ways to lose. 40 years, ZERO Cups.
Going forward I'm taking the Atlanta Braves fans' approach from the 1990's to manage my free time. I'm not watching the Caps until they have 3 wins in the Stanley Cup finals and are looking to finally win a 4th game and possibly win the Cup. What's the point of watching game in and game out (sure, Holtby was awesome...Ovie, Backstrom and Ward had some amazing goals...and there's been other amazing moments in team history...but amazing moments are not the Stanley Cup. Not for the Washington Capitals.) but, if the ultimate end is elimination...yeah, I'd rather have spent my life doing something else. It will probably mean I'm less of a fan but, that's kind of a low bar in this town...Hell, there's "hockey" fans in DC who think the history of the team only extends back as far as Ovechkin being drafted.
I've spent well in excess of $400,000 in following this team for 40 years...tickets, sweaters, travel expenses for road games, concessions. And I've spent DAYS of my life following this team and its 40 years of failure. So, my account...my recknoning...yeah, I'm "paid up", Mr. Leonsis. The bill has come due and I'm not authorizing anymore "payments" until this is settled.
Call me if you ever get 3 wins in the Cup finals...I'll be right there watching and rooting again. Until then...take your losing ways and overcome them.
