A 9-year-old boy who told police he was being bullied has been charged with bringing a handgun to Ellis Elementary School outside Manassas.

Police were called to the school off Rixlew Lane near Stonewall Jackson High School about 9:30 a.m. Thursday after school officials confiscated the gun -- which was disassembled and in a case -- from a fourth-grade student, said police spokeswoman Ericca Figueroa.

The boy brought the gun from his home, Figueroa said, and had been showing it to other students, apparently on the school bus. One of those students reported the gun to a teacher, who reported it to the school administration.

Prince William schools spokesman Phil Kavits said the gun was immediately confiscated and police were called. The disassembled gun could not have been discharged in that state, police and school officials said.

The boy was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and released to the custody of a parent.

Police also charged a 29-year-old man, Travis Pettie of the 10000 block of Statesboro Street, with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for leaving the gun unsecured. Figueroa declined to say what relationship Pettie has with the boy, citing the ongoing investigation.

Parents of students at the school were called and a letter went home, he said.

The situation was quickly diffused thanks to the student who reported the gun, Kavits said.

“We are very proud the student did the right thing, and that made a difference,” he said.

To to be honest with you I think the blame must rest with the mentality of parents these days.

Those that think "its takes a village" are more likely to pass on the responsibility of raising their kids to others...yet they cry the loudest when their kid is "called out" to be disciplined and utter the disgusting phrase to the teacher or person in authority..."what did you do to make my kid curse you out"?

Obviously the kid falls into the entitled 47% club!
