OK here is how to pass emissions. Search online for Virginia Rapidpass locations, which are drive by emissions monitoring. Get up plenty of speed, shut the engine off, and coast by the emissions sensors. This will give you zero tailpipe emissions when you coast by. Drive by the sensors 2 or 3 times.

Then go to the website and click the button "Am I clean" to pay for the emissions.

That will not work due to insufficient sample. Luckily though they are pretty lax and you can pass without any cats at all of you do it right. Cats operating below efficiency should be easy to get a pass on, especially if there are multiple.

If you must use a torch for some reason, a $40 home depot one will do just fine. If you're replacing cats on a beater, you don't need any of that. Exhaust cutter and some exhaust clamps to hold your new cats. Done.

RapidPass is a bunch of crap, they worked on it for like 10 years before it was deployed. I agree that is tends to pass most of the cars that drive through it.

The only caveat is if the car has failed Emissions either at a station or via RapidPass usually you have to revisit an inspection station for testing.

Go onto this site and find where the systems are deployed - www.rapidpass.org

Try to drive through 2 different sites on the same day or a day apart.

Get the car up to speed and then coast through if you can or be very light on the throttle. Most cars go into a Decel with Fuel Cut off mode when coasting so it shuts the fuel injectors down so the exhaust is clean at this point.

Not sure how long the data takes to get processed, but you can go online and see if your car passed and pay the fee.

I tried RapidPass when I had a check engine light for a bad cat. Looked successful driving through several times. Checked online and found out my result was "Vehicle Not Eligible." The RapidPass website says that, among other things, you will get that result if you failed emissions already for the current cycle.

(That wasn't my problem though. As near as I can tell, I was in category 4, which says, "The Commonwealth of Virginia applies a Vehicle Emissions Index (VEI) to determine the cleanest overall group of vehicles and their eligibility for RAPIDPASS. The VEI is based on the emissions test history of a particular Year, Make, and Engine Size. The VEI is updated quarterly. Vehicle groups identified with a VEI exceeding the limit are not eligible to for a RAPIDPASS.")

My check engine light is on. Advanced Auto checked why for free. The code came back something about the evaporation system. I was told I would have to have it fixed before I could pass emissions inspection. Rapid Pass system was set up on the exit I take to get on 66 on the way home from work. I checked on the website and was clear, sent in the money and renewed my tags no problem.

If you have a smart phone or tablet, get an OBDII App and interface so you can read the codes along with Live/Realtime or Freeze Frame data then you will know exactly what is going on with the engine fuel management system.

What is the issue here? You have 120 days with RapidPass or 90 days at an inspection station to get your emissions test passed before your registration renewal is due.

And the requirement isn't because Virginia wanted it, the US Government requires Virginia to have an emissions program in cities/counties that fail to meet air quality standards.

An inspector who will fail you for recently cleared codes will probably find some other reason to fail you. A decent inspector won't care. I had an old car fail. Took it to a supposed emissions specialist. The guy said he could run some stuff through my system and 3 times out of 4 it would pass. The price was $50. I paid. It worked. I got the readouts I needed. Next inspection the car passed no problem, so who knows what gave me the bad readings the first time.

What’s a “creep up”? Is that slang for pending codes? I know they can see if codes have been recently deleted but don’t know how many miles or how long the engine must be driven before it will read a valid test.

On newer OBD2 cars there is a scanner that is plugged in that reads the cars VIN number and if codes have been recently been deleted. There is no wiggle room for these tests.
