Before I-66

Before I-66 was build through Fairfax County (1980s inside the beltway, and 1960s west of the beltway), was there a local road in the corridor in its place?

Some of the inside the beltway section was originally a railroad, but how many local houses were destroyed to build I-66?

By "in it's place" I think the answer you're looking for is two parts: No and/or Fairfax Drive.

Back in the 60's, "outside the Beltway" was not really part of the Metro area. It was seen as a land of farms and orchards and the odd sorts of folks who eked out a living off of those. As for inside the Beltway, most commuted into downtown DC and the major routes were Route 50, Lee Highway, and the GW Parkway. Commute times were about the same as they are today.

Used to park in a big lot where the Reagan Building is now. A monthly pass was $10.40 split between the four of us in the carpool.

There were bear, bob cats, etc, inside the beltway before I-66. Great dirt bike trails.

That was also a great lot to park in when going to the National or Warner Theater.

Not so good if Hanafi Muslims were occupying the District Building.
