Sunoco 9626 Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22031

They will refill your 20 pound tank for 25 bucks. If you exchange your tank at Home cheapo they only put 15 pounds in the new tank. This is legal because they put a wrap around the tank that states it's just 15 pounds. Sunoco will actually weigh in a full 20 pounds.

BJ's if you have a membership.

Propane Taxi is convenient--I haven't used it but my neighbor swears by it. If it saves you time and costs the same as Lowes, that's a win.

I paid $18 two days ago in oxon Hill MD.

Those places that fill them(bjs etc) will have you WAITINGGGGGG forever!

Easier just to swap them out.

$18 includes tax at food lion

Propane contains 21,548 Btus per pound. Find out how many btu's your appliance burns per hour (it's on the data plate) and do the math. Simple.

A 20 pound capacity tank having a Water Capacity of 47.6 pounds can safely hold 20 pounds of liquid propane with lots of empty space above the liquid. Let me provide conclusive proof :

Tank will hold exactly 47.6 pounds of water and water density is 8.33 pounds per US gallon. Therefore the TANK VOLUME IS 5.71 US gallons total.

Liquid Propane at reasonable temperatures has a density of 4.24 pounds per US gallon. Therefore 20 pounds occupies 4.717 gallons of the tank volume.

The % of Tank Volume occupied IS : 4.717 divided by 5.71 => 82.6 % .

The industry uses 0.42 to provide a one step method to calculate the safe fill weight from the Water Capacity. Here we have 0.42 x 47.6 => 19.992 pounds.

I hope this clears up any doubts about the fact that 20 pound tanks are properly designed to hold 20 pounds of liquid propane.

So do they all get filled to 20 lbs? Never heard this about places filling to 15lbs. So if places don’t actually fill to 20, how do I know who they are? Walmart at $16/lb or my local gas station at $20?

Southern States LP gas for $3.49/gallon. Typically 4.4 gallons=$15.36 per empty 20# tank. A little less than Walmart.

propane taxi is convenient, but more expensive.

Home depot is between the two.

I'd be wary of those cheap refill places. We had one lightup last year, luckily we kicked it off the porch just in time. Shot out noise and flames like you wouldn't believe, to the point where our neighbors started coming out. Must have been a bad valve or seal but eventually they got the thing out thankfully.
