White Mom who got high on drugs while her two-year-old daughter died of asphyxiation in her car seat death pleads guilty to manslaughter

A New Jersey woman who was high on drugs in the front seat of her car and left her two-year-old daughter unattended for hours in her car seat, where she died, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Deanna Joseph also pleaded guilty Monday to child endangerment and drug and weapons charges in the August 2017 death of her toddler Kayley Freeman.
The 39-year-old woman faces up to 15 years in prison when she's sentenced on March 16.

Kayley's father, Thomas Freeman, found Joseph passed out in the driver's seat of her Mercedes at the end of the driveway where the couple shared a home in Alloway Township with Kayley slumped over in her car seat.
An autopsy determined that she died of positional asphyxia, which describes a condition in which a person's breathing is obstructed because of the way their body is positioned.

Joseph eventually admitted to using drugs that day. Searches of her car and home turned up bags with trace amounts of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. A blood test revealed cocaine in her system
A court later heard that Joseph traveled to Salem twice on the day Kayley to purchase drugs while the toddler was strapped in her car seat.
The manslaughter charge carries a maximum 10 years in prison with a requirement to serve 85 percent before being eligible for parole.

Joseph's criminal record over the last 20 years includes 10 felony convictions. She previously pleaded guilty in two other incidents in which she left children unattended while high on drugs (Pictured, the driveway where Kayley was found slumped over in her car seat)
While the endangering charge and drug charges could be served concurrently, the weapon charge carries a maximum five-year term that would be served on top of the 10 years.
Joseph's criminal record over the last 20 years includes 10 felony convictions. She previously pleaded guilty in two other incidents in which she left children unattended while high on drugs.
A grand jury indicted Joseph in November on seven charges, including manslaughter, endangering, weapons offenses and drug charges, and she faced a maximum of 100 years in prison.

Defense attorney Peter Alfinito said that while the plea agreement was a fair outcome, his client remains remorseful over her child's death.
'She [pleaded] guilty today to a tragic accident,' he said. 'There's no way she intended it...She would probably put herself in that child's place in a heartbeat.'

Joseph permanently lost custody of her first four children in 2011 and the fathers had custody of the next two, including Kayley, according to state welfare officials.
