Some elective operations at a Fairfax County hospital were canceled this week because of recurring grit found on sterilized surgical equipment.

A spokeswoman for Inova Fairfax Hospital told WTOP in an email that the hospital is working to identify the root cause of the sterile, sandlike particles. Extra steps to ensure the equipment is properly sterilized is taking additional time and as a result, fewer than 10 percent of elective surgeries had to be canceled.

“A limited number” of particles continue to show up on surgical trays and equipment after they’ve gone through the sterilization process, Tracy Connell said in the email statement.

You'd care if you were the one going under the knife.

If this keeps up, INOVA CEO Knox Singleton may find himself retired involuntarily a few months earlier than his planned retirement. He and his staff better figure out what's going on and quickly.

I'll still take Fairfax over Arlington Hospital, and I live 5 minutes away from it.

Things like this don't happen within universal single payer healthcare systems.

That's because you have to wait months, if not years, to get surgical procedures under socialized medicine, also known as single payer healthcare. That is, if they'll let you get the procedure in the first place.
