For months (years?) FU has been predicting that the renaming of JEB Stuart was just the first step and that Washington and Jefferson and the rest of them would be next and now it has started. Washington's name is being taken down at his church. Ten years from now there will be hundreds of schools, roads, and parks re-branded. Justice High School, Peace Road, Equality Park.

It's their church. They can run it how they want. Money talks and bullshit runs the marathon. If you made a large enough donation, they'd put those plaques back up by the end of the day.

It's a private institution. Neither state nor federal government have any jurisdiction regarding statues on private lands. Kindly notice, most of the objectionable things removed have been removed from public lands and buildings.

There have been a few instances (the deconsecration of the stained glass windows at the National Cathedral) of private lands and buildings removing things...but, that's by choice not political pressures.

After prayerful reflection I have decided I can no longer be an Episcopalian. This is not an action lightly taken. My ancestors who first came here in the 1650s were Church of England and its sister Church of Scotland,and we have been since. I support the idea that the Episcopal Church should be more inclusive. Inclusive works both ways. Removing symbols of our past, be it stain glassed windows in the National Cathedral or the Washington and Lee plaques at Christ Church sends two signals. To African Americans and others it says "you are welcome here". To traditional Episcopalians it says "we don't want your kind anymore". Sadly this message is being delivered by more than just removing symbols from the past. It is also being delivered by prayers, by sermons and by the ministries the Church pursues.

Many of my friends in the Church are traditional Episcopalians. They have quite often been the people who have sustained the congregation with their contributions, both of money and time. They have cheerfully welcomed the arrival of all newcomers regardless of race, national origin or sexual preference. They stood by the Episcopal Church when conservatives chose to break away. I cannot remain a member of a church which is now telling them they are no longer welcome.

I do not know what path I will follow now. I am certain that it is not the current path of the Episcopal Church.

Not even close to what was there. lol

I grew up in Del Ray back when Del Ray was Del Ray. Not a nice part of town then. But even that was a lot better than most of old Town proper. You had a few blocks of the historic streets that were OK. King Street away from that and the rest was a dump. Most of the row houses along Duke and Prince had clotheslines hanging out of broken windows and people drinking on the steps. All of those apartments toward the bridge and the duplex and townhouses across the street toward Simpson field were slums. Same with everything around the rail yards. They got rid of all of 'those people.'
