Lots of people who live in Fairfax County have direct personal experience with life in depressed areas, and think Fairfax is a pretty nice place to live, shop, socialize, work, and raise a family. It's not hard to find an uncrowded place with lots of natural beauty and no economic activity to speak of. The lack of economic activity explains the natural beauty and uncrowded aspect.

The tipping point was about 1983.
Of course, up into the 1940s things were a lot more rural.
For a couple of generations after that, the area grew up into
a very nice suburban region. After about 1983, growth went
visibly non-linear and the area was clearly overbuilding.
Today, we're near the terminal phase of turning into a
more urban area -- it's hard to see where "the city" ends,
all the way out into the county. It's that uncomfortable
place where it's gone from nice suburbs to overcrowded
near-urban. It will never get better, as this growth was
never planned for, and it is simply impossible to improve
the infrastructure and services to accomodate it all.
You can't tear down enough houses to ever accomplish it.
The transition to "shit hole" is one-way, I'm afraid.

This is true, while living in Annandale @84, we had friends who were looking to buy in Centerville, going out there was "WTF" who wants to live out here? Also, leaving Tysons on 7 was a nice drive through horse country, Leesburg, etc...now, UGH!
