Mission BBQ coming to Alexandria
Posted by: Springfield Joe ()
Date: April 11, 2017 03:40PM

Mission BBQ is coming to the former Red Hot and Blue site at Telegraph and Belulah near Wegmans in Alex by Fort Belvior. Not sure how it will survive with Dickey' up the street. Mission BBQ is another chain. Anybody tried them at one of their other locations?

It blows Dickeys out of the water. Mission has great meats, best pulled pork and brisket and lots of different sauces. I recommend the Memphis Belle or Smoky Mountain. The sides are just ok, nothing special.

It's got great barbecue, but even better is what it stands for. Each day, at noon, they play the national anthem, which staff and patrons join in. The mission is to give back to service members, what's not to like. For the naysayers it's not a scam, the guy who started it is an ex-dotcom mega-millionaire, he actually gives back to the service community. The company has a location in Annapolis that serves the football team at most of their functions, think the owners son is an Academy graduate. There's actually a Mission Barbecue opening in the Greenbrier shopping center as well in Chantilly, right next door to the wing factory.

The BBQ is on par with Dickey's & Famous Daves. Nothing special. As the poster above stated, they support good causes, but the food is average BBQ at best. I ate at the one in Chantilly, it was ok, not great.

Mission BBQ Chantilly is very good and very busy. Probably the best in Northern Virginia. Can't go wrong with perfectly cooked meats and seven sauces.

For the absolute best BBQ east of the Mississippi, stop at Pierce's Pitt BBQ off of the Lightfoot exit on I-64, near Williamsburg.

They play off the veteran thing too much. The food is pre cooked and packaged like the shity food in a buffet restaurant. I'll never go back. And don't rag on me about the veteran thing. I spent 26 years in America's military so fuck off.

Saying they are probably the best in NoVa invalidates every fucking thing afterwards. 7 sauces to cover up average meat.

If the meat is of good quality, and cooked properly, is doesn't need to be smothered in a sauce

They can stand out there and shout the national anthem all they want, but that's no excuse for not serving a good brunswick stew. They're not fooling anybody with that idiotic singing. If they wanted to be patriotic they'd pay their people not to do that.

The military theme has more to do with the founders family ties to the Naval Academy and military in general. The one thing they've got going for them is wherever they open, active duty and veterans will follow. Plus, there's nothing wrong with being patriotic, it's actually a nice thing to see in this day and age.

There's nothing patriotic about disrupting a meal I paid for with ridiculous singing. It's stupid. I'm there to enjoy some barbecue with my family, not have people interrupting me and forcing me to stand there while they are singing. it's not a sporting event or a military funeral, it's a restaraunt.

Mission is pretty decent by NoVA standards, but once you compare it to BBQ found south of Stafford it's just meh... The patriotic thing is lame too, I already paid my thanks with all the taxes I paid. Military receive enough thanks in form of bullshit disability payouts and many other life long benefits.

So you paying taxes equates to a veteran losing a limb and receiving disability payouts? Somehow I don't think they compare. Not to mention that many of the "lifelong" perks are being eliminated. Bottom line is if you don't want to be subjected to the "patriotic thing" then don't go eat there. But you should be thankful for those patriots because the freedom you enjoy wasn't free.....

Those who lost a limb obviously deserve it, but there are many who get lifelong disability for things like a hurt neck, ptsd, anxiety and other little bullshit things. Guys who never saw a day of combat.

What style is it? Memphis? Texas? East Carolina? West Carolina? South Carolina? Alabama? Too often the response you get is It's BBQ. This is why they need the sauces. People have ideas about what BBQ is based on the regionals, and when you put out something generic it does not match up.

Lexington style seems to be currently in vogue, but when I was living in NC "western" was the term I usually heard used for the red sauce seasoning which distinguished it from the vinegar and pepper based eastern NC style.

You need to get out more. Their sauce is quite good. Meats are mediocre at best.

The best BBQ east of the Mississippi is probably being served off a dirt road intersection from a trailer/grill somewhere.....definitely not in Lightfoot VA.

Drive 13 miles south on Indian Head highway and the second you creep up on 228, you will see one BBQ stand across from the Exxon.

Then, creep a 1/2mile further South at PINE LANE, and you will see " this BBQ is so good, he drives up from some town in NC, and just works thurs-sundays.

This is real BBQ. Blacks always got tough cuts of meat so they perfected how to make it delicious.

With the exception of Owner of famous daves, a real BBQ guy has to be over 300 lbs and always sweating....

Worth the drive in non rush hour traffic. Sunday, 3pm on a non home game for the Skins would be ideal timing.

Stop going to these corporate places, eating "corporate BBQ" with small ass portions, and THEN obligated to paying a tip to some waiter that gives shitty service!

I haven't been to their real restaurants but the The Bone in Capital One Center (formerly Verizon Center) is decent pulled pork, specially in a stadium. It's Eastern NC style, they give you a Western NC sauce to dump on it if you want. You can tell the pitmaster knows what he's doing without hiding behind a sauce.

If I had a reason to go to Manasshole I would stop in and check them out.

There used to be a BBQ place in the back side of Manassas Park next to the 7-11 down Old Centerville Rd. across from that old crusty apartment complex. The guy had pits built and would do whole hog and pull it right in front of you on the counter to order. He learned how to do it down in SC at the beach working for someone that had a BBQ place down there. It was pretty good, but just a horrible location. He closed it and then tried to make another run at it a few years later. That's about as close to NC/SC BBQ you are going to get around here unless you do it yourself.

Famous Dave's sucks. The sausage is decent, but the rest is horrible. The ribs have no meat on them. There is a District BBQ going in across the street from me. I will give it a go, but not expecting anything special. Best to do it myself.

Red Hot and Blue's motto had it right -- the best barbeque in a building that hasn't been already condemned.

The best BBQ I've ever had was in some small Southern town where you ask the locals where to find the best BBQ in town.

Its something like drive down this road, take the fork and look for the smoke, etc. You find some cinderblock shack. The place is usually run by some guy who got up early and did the work in his pit and the stuff sold out early in the afternoon.

Chains just can't do cue.
