Nova Community College - Used Books
Posted by: CorbinDallas ()
Date: August 24, 2011 05:16PM

We just had our first experience purchasing books for NOVA classes, prices totally outragious. At most colleges, student's resale their books. Anyone suggestions? Just purchased a spanish book, Hablemos Espanol! Teresa Mendez-Faith for $186!!Would love to purchase at a more sane price. Have about 5 more books to buy....Input please.

i doubt that was the price for the used book. more like new.

you can rent the books(some) for the semester. keep in mind if you take summer classes that often the books will be discontinued and a new version will come up in the fall.

So yes, often the fall semester is the most expensive due to new editions out then.

i was almost tempted to inform one of the people in line trying to sell her used bio book that they wouldnt buy it back due to new edition coming out (well it came out) for the fall.

you spent $186 on a book to teach you spanish?

why not work at fast food and get paid learning spanish?

welcome to my world..its ridiculous. $200 books to go along with a $400 class... X's that by how many classes you take a semester = Empty Pockets....And then you hope you can get some money back at the end of the semester but they tell you that They no longer are accepting your books..or they give you $10 dollars back (which i feel is a slap in the face compared to $0 dollars back.)

First, make sure you absolutely need the book. It got the point where I'd rarely need to buy a book. Some professors use it to assign work while others barely reference it.

With that said, if you have to buy the book... use Chegg.

There are many many places that buy back the text books - often for more than offered by Nova.....I usually google the ISBN number, then the options come up. Occasionally, the book is not used anymore by anyone and its not worth anything. This is true with technology books.

I have found the best thing to do is RENT the book - most pay the postage for delivery and returning.....

OMG. Common sense, sell them online! Craigslist, Ebay, Amazon. Make posters and post it at Nova
You really think Nova is the only place that sells those books? come on.

Does anyone have experience re-selling NVCC textbooks through:

http://novatextbooks.blogspot.com/p/sell-textbooks.html

or

My kids were able to rent many of their books. At the end of the semester they'd box them up and return them to the company.

My understanding is the schools are wise to this and have made it difficult to rent required books

That text book is trash. Hopefully you aren't taking spanish with Christopher Blake. Dude is crazy. If you are drop that class ASAP unless you want to destroy your GPA.

There probably are teachers who will try and foil your efforts to keep book costs down, but not all professors are assholes. Even some of the more cost conscious ones will have to occasionally go with something expensive because a better option isn't available.

My suggestion would be, "Don't worry about your kid and enroll yourself and learn to write proper English."

i.e. "...outragious...;"
...resell not 'resale their books;'
"Anyone suggestions?" No explanation needed;
"Hablemos Espanol...." Shouldn't be learning Spanish anyway. THEY need to learn fucking English......

Shall I continue? Go whine somewhere else if you can't afford to put your kid through college.

I asked the testing center and they said as long as the title is the same you can use older versions. My teacher (more like grader) said he doesn't mind.

those crips at NVCC have been stealing since the 90's at least (falsely ticketing cars, running rip-off that prevent use of used books, and more)

they're democrats and i assume you know very well that the same complaints have been lodged by many

FOR DECADES

the fact is the criminals in fx co "gov" skip court and use police to attack anyone who challenges their spending and their weapons

The savvy teachers who are probably getting a kick back are now using text books that have online codes that are only good for 1 use. If you want to do the homework, you must have the online code forcing you to buy the book new. Want to sell it? Well it's just about worthless as the next person will need the code too.
