Smoking was allowed outdoors on school grounds, and this was common just about everywhere, not just Fairfax. Tobacco smoking and chewing rates among students is down nationwide, particularly among wealthier and more educated people. The CDC publishes the statistics.

While you were cooly smoking Camels, we were cool smoking Columbians.

We were cool; life was cool.

Now, the Columbians are smoking the Salvadorans and the gangs are smoking everyone!

Nothing cool about that; nothing cool about life.

I miss the good old days.

Springfield Mall allowed smoking while shopping! Then, Koreans started moving in, then the Salvadoran with their circus music....finally, with the extension of the blue line-ghetto niggahs from PG started to flock in.

Bring back smoking to the mall and keep it white!

Smoking is such a disgusting and fowl habit.

I wend to Yorktown back in the late 70's and the kids always hung out and smoked near one of the door ways that was furthest from the Front Office. Nobody seemed to really care to attempt to ban this. I guess they are grateful the kids were smoking cigarettes and not Pot.

My parents were chain smokers and my siblings were always stuck in the back of the car on trips choking on the stench and we always were seating in the smoking section in the airplane or at restaurants. Myself and all by siblings were SO disgusted by all of this none of us even attempted or were interessted in smoking, even if it was not the "cool" thing to do.

I am surprised I am not dead from 2nd hand smoke. My mother is 87 years old now and it on Oxygen. 75 years of smoking did her no favors, she has not been take out by smoking so far. She finally quit about 9 months ago once she had to be on oxygen permanently.

I would NEVER allow her to smoke in my vehicles or at my house, I tossed her outside like an intruder when she wanted to smoke. If I went to her house, it was like going to a smoke filled bar in the 80's. I would have to come home, change all my clothes and toss them outside then take a shower to get all the smoke out of my hair. Anything she owns is covered in tar and smoke, all fabrics have absorbed decades of smoke. I will have a hard time selling her house because the walls, hardwood floors and kitchen cabinets all have decades of smoke that have penetrated everything.

Such a sad state of a bio-hazard, but like any smoker, she got her way and everyone was wrong for complaining about her disgusting habit.

Thank god my kids are so grossed out by all of this they also had NO interest in every trying smoking. Then you have all the dumb ass kids and their E-cigarettes that they think they can use anywhere they choose. Take this crap and go somewhere else!

When I was about 14 years old my parents moved from the D.C. area out to the boonies in the Shenandoah Valley. I was shocked to find out that they actually had a smoking area in the small high school there! You had to get a permission slip signed by your parents before you would be allowed to smoke in the smoking area, which was just outside the building at the end of one of the hallways. If you had the permission slip you could smoke out there between classes and during lunchtime. I never had a permission slip because my parents would never have allowed it, but I would sneak a few smokes with my friends whenever the principal was around.

Also, I remember walking around Fair Oaks Mall in the 80's smoking and checking out the girls. Fun days gone now.

The kids who frequented the smoking area were the dregs and rejects. Also, the sports teams mandated that you not smoke and most everyone who wasn't a reject played some sport. SJ.

Smoking is not HEALTHY and COOL.
It causes emphysema, throat/tongue/lip cancer.
Additionally, it causes lung cancer.
Please do not indulge in this vile habit.

Not really. A few but for the most part kids look at it as stupid. Vaping is actually held in lower regard but both are shunned by the Woodson crowd.
