I've wanted to add a feature like this for some time now, but I guess it's better for us just to infiltrate an existing project than start our own... until they start censoring.

Wikimapia is a project that gives you the "google maps" interface and allows you to "tag" certain areas like businesses, homes, etc with a description.

Here is the link for Fairfax County:

It's very interesting and has the potential to grow to cover everything in the county.

Please "tag" new areas and provide a link back to Fairfax Underground so other residents stumbling upon the site can find us.

I really wonder why Google doesn't set something like this up. It would be so easy for them to provide ads or web links to any of the user selected areas.

I guess their unmarked reston building isn't so unmarked anymore.

this actually can be considered a breach of national security (i agree with that too) so i woundnt be surprised if that stuff gets removed... perhaps on the threat of having the entire page taken down.

Actually I think the page is hosted in russia so that might be a little difficult.
Just KNOWING where something is didn't used to be a breach of national security, it was knowing what's going on inside.
And i like how that curious in centreville guy got no replies in his thread about govt buildings in NoVA

ESRI and other USA companies made layered mapping data and software from the 80's for the US government FOR PURCHASE (ie, not by communism).

Google used that data and published it. Their right to share US GOV data, and hard bought mapping techniques, with the world "for free" is HIGHLY questionable.

Google gets USA grant money - they cost you even if you are not using them.
