Ann Bonitatibus, who currently serves as superintendent of the Conejo Valley Unified School District in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has been named principal of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), effective July 17. TJHSST is a Fairfax County public school and the regional magnet Governor’s School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia.

“Dr. Bonitatibus brings experience at every level of a public school system to the position at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology,” said Interim Superintendent Steve Lockard. “She is skilled at engaging parents, members of the community, and business partners to provide support and actively participate in schools for the benefit of students. We are very excited to have her take the helm at Thomas Jefferson for the school’s next chapter.”

As superintendent of Conejo Valley Unified School District, Bonitatibus rebranded and marketed the district as a choice destination for education, resulting in an increase in interdistrict transfers; engaged stakeholders in focus groups and individual interviews while developing a greenprint for success for local control; led a cultural shift from gatekeeping to door-opening, resulting in previously underrepresented students having greater access to, and success in, honors and Advanced Placement classes; made social and emotional wellness a priority and facilitated a superintendent’s book club for parents; explored dual enrollment opportunities with a local community college; and restructured the district’s leadership team.

Prior to accepting the superintendent’s position in California, Bonitatibus served as chief operating officer for Frederick (Md.) County Public Schools, where she was responsible for increasing community engagement, using multiple digital platforms to market the system, coordinating a high school feasibility study, and improving the operational efficiency of multiple departments. She previously served as associate superintendent of secondary schools and director of high schools with Frederick County Public Schools.

Bonitatibus taught English and math in Frederick County Public Schools for eight years before becoming assistant principal at two schools in the district, then principal at New Market Middle School and Catoctin High School. She earned her bachelor of science in communications education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a master of science in administration and supervision from McDaniel College, and a doctor of education in organizational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania
