Fire Damages Annandale Restaurant

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/29/AR2008072900624.html

Squire Rockwell's, an Annandale restaurant on Little River Turnpike, was badly damaged in a fire early this morning, a spokesman for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said.

The blaze appeared concentrated in the bar area of the sprawling, Tudor-style eatery, which boasts four dining rooms and three distinctive red awnings over the entrance.

Fire department spokesman Dan Schmidt said dispatchers at the county's 911 call center, located in a converted elementary school about a half-block from the restaurant, detected a "strong smell of smoke" about 2 a.m. and called for fire trucks to respond to the building.

ad_icon
"There was no fire showing here at the restaurant, but there was a lot of smoke and heat," Schmidt said Soon, the fire ignited, burning through the roof of the building and destroying the bar and lounge area, Schmidt said.

Firefighters needed about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze. One firefighter received non-life-threatening injuries, Schmidt said. The restaurant is believed to have been empty when the fire broke out.

According to its Web site, Squire Rockwell's is "an elegant English Inn style restaurant" that features live music and sing-alongs several nights a week. Early this year, it was closed for 12 days because of flooding.

Schmidt said it was too early to know how long it will take to repair the fire damage, which he described as extensive. In addition to significant smoke and water damage, he said, the rear portion of the roof is gone, and the entrance to the restaurant "has got some major damage because of things we had to do to get in there."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, Schmidt said. Although the restaurant is located at 8700 Little River Turnpike, fire and emergency vehicles were stationed in the parking lot and surrounding side streets, and the turnpike itself was open to traffic for the morning commute.

Two-Alarm West Annandale Restaurant Fire

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fr/news/2008archive/2008_054.htm

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a commercial building fire Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at approximately 1:45 a.m., in the western area of Annandale. The building, the Squire Rockwell's restaurant, is located at 8700 Little River Turnpike.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke billowing from the roof, eaves, and windows of the one-story, Tudor-style restaurant upon arrival. Firefighters quickly called for a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters found active fire in the roof, ceiling, and surrounding void spaces. Firefighters accessed the roof area to breach hidden void areas to keep the fire from spreading throughout the 7,100 square foot structure. It took firefighters approximately 90 minutes to stabilize the incident. The majority of the property damage was in the bar area. The restaurant was closed when the fire broke out. One firefighter received a non-life threatening injury and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Firefighters were called to the scene by the Uniformed Fire Officer who was working in the Department of Public Safety Communications, 911 call/dispatch center. While briefly outside, he smelled smoke and then quickly dispatched fire units from Fire and Rescue Station 23, West Annandale, to investigate for a possible fire in the area. The 911 call/dispatch center is approximately 100 yards from the structure.

Damage is estimated at $1 million.

According to fire investigators, the fire started in a ceiling space above the bar area of the restaurant. The fire is under investigation.

So what do you suggest mr Ramsey. Just look how many GAR restaurants have been mentioned so far. For <$20 per person meals it's a good value.

GAR's are overpriced dumps. Anyone who would pay $19 for a French Dip is an idiot.
Glory Days for a cheeseburger and fries or Baja Fresh and you'll be just as satisfied.
Cheesecake Factory as well serves crap. Ordered a Cuban sandwich there once and it was absolutely awful.

Ciro's in Centreville, excellent.
Boun Appetite in Chantilly, excellent.

I have tried great american restaurants, etc in this area.

None have impressed me, it all tastes like it came from the back of a Sysco/US Foods truck, reheated in butter (since it was pre-cooked) and had seasonings added then put on my plate.

I am happier going to wegman's or costco, finding a nice cut of meat, the farmers market for fresh veggies if I have the time, and cooking it at home myself.

Ends up being cheaper too.

I do go to restaurants if I do not feel like cooking at all, but 9/10 I will choose to dine at home. The experiences restaurants provide are nice, but with the current trend of dim lighting and loud music and mediocre food, I am happier at home where I can control my environment. Telling the manager of the issues do get an apology and a correction on my bill or a free beverage offered, but I go back another time and the same issues are there.

Instead of complaining and wasting management's time I will do it my way at home and save money.

I know i can be a difficult consumer, and am polite in all interactions and discreet (I won't yell at a server like I see some idiots doing, simply talk to them as if they are a great friend and i need to let them know something personal without malice or anger), so to mitigate any situations I simply stay home.

Similar advice I would give to those who come into a restaurant with exactly enough to pay the bill- if one cannot afford to tip their server, please stay home.

There is no good food this far south. Got to go to Philly or NYC for truly good food. Fuck Fairfax county.

Mikes American grill in Springfield is great. Coastal flats in fairfax corner used to be good when it first opened, but with all the minorities moving in around there it has gone to shit.
I'm the manager of one of their restaurants

Clarity in Vienna is highly-rated. I only ate there once and it was good but not spectacular. L'Auberge Chez Francois Great Falls is my top pick/

You called it, when I worked at GAR all the shit was Sysco cooked up by the local illegals even back in the 90's.

I eat at the GAR restaurants Mikes, Artie's, Sweetwater, etc. occasionally. I find the food is acceptable, but the previous poster hit the nail on the head:

I agree with that assessment, and although it doesn't taste bad, it is not at all outstanding and seems to have a lot of salt. Unfortunately there aren't too many other restaurant options in Fairfax County. Arlington and Alexandria have many choices, but the rest of the area is pretty sparse. There are a few good Thai, pizza, and ethnic places here and there. Monty's Steakhouse in West Springfield is good, albeit in an odd location. It would seem like a golden opportunity and in fact Mike's always seems crowded with people despite the mediocre food
