Southern Democrats were the primary holdouts to the civil rights movement including infamous Democrats like George Wallace and Bull Connor. Or consider Senator Robert Byrd's filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. That is some more history that should not be forgotten.

Don't forge Democrat senator Robert Byrd, who was Grand Kleagle in the KKK, responsible for youth recruitment.
Way to go, Democrats.

lol, so where are all those southern democrat sentiments now in the political spectrum?

after the 1950s call for desegregation and the 1960's civil rights movement, they all left the GOP. kicked out basically, and no longer welcomed.

the southern strategy is a legacy of today's Republican party.

Yes they do. Virtually all Christian and Buddhist statues, churches, and temples have been destroyed in Afghanistan by those savages who follow "the religion of peace and tolerance"...

JEB Stuart was directly responsible for the killing and maiming of hundreds, if not thousands, of patriotic American men serving their country. If you hillbillies think that's so awesome, go buy a statue and put it in your double wide. Real Americans don't celebrate traitors.

If you hate the name so much, move to east LA and send your kids to Ceasar Chavez high school...
That's all you liberals do, name call. You're the reason Trump won...

so funny you use Cesar Chavez as an example

Cesar Chavez: led a non violent civil rights movement to improve wages and working conditions for laborers and farm workers

JEB Stuart: led a very violent rebellion against his own country to make sure that blacks were forced to work without being paid

that's hilarious actually, meathead

Erasing history is a BAD thing, it will cause history to repeat itself much sooner.

The Civil War was less about slavery and more to do with states rights, the sooner people understand this the better off everyone will be.

South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, all of them cited the growing hostility toward slavery as the reason they were seceding. They actually wrote that right into their Decalarations of Secession.

Guess that musta been a typo or clerical error, lol

It's really funny too because even confederate historians and authors don't hide the cause behind the "states rights" thing. Ya know why? Because if you read the records and the letters and the newspapers from that era it was the main thing they were talking about for years. Sure, they also really felt they had the right to nullify federal law, no doubt about it, but literally the entire issue was about slave ownership, going all the way back to 1820 and the Missouri Compromise. These morons on here act like suddenly, for no reason, a group of states, who all just happened to be slave states, just up and decided "hey we want states rights". lol.

By this reasoning anything named after general Sherman should be renamed. He killed more innocent people during the civil war than anyone. Burned entire cities to starve the local population. Know your history before u speak. Sherman circle in Dc should be renamed as well as the General Sherman tree in California.

Name one right, other than to own slaves, the south objected to having taken.

lol, no historical record portrays Sherman killing innocent civilians- and his military campaigns are really well documented. Literally day-by-day, mile-by-mile accounts written by numerous sources. Not even Jefferson Davis or his generals ever accused Sherman of something so stupid. In fact Sherman was quite fair to civilians provided they obeyed their local laws and did not resist or aid resistance. Atlanta was burned by southern troops, probably the same for Columbia SC, no one really knows for sure, but he did burn Jackson and Meridian, MS. It wasn't to starve the locals, which would've been a waste of time. It was done to cripple the confederacy's ability to manufacture and supply its war effort, and bring the terrible destruction of warfare to the average southern man's front doorstep.

The historical record does not portray Sherman ORDERING the killing of civilians. That does not mean it wasn't done, and in fact it happened with some frequency. As Sherman swept through Georgia and the Carolinas his army had large numbers of followers. Some were Union troops foraging for supplies and any valuables they could pick up along the way. Others were deserters from Sherman's army or the forces opposing Sherman. Others were civilians including a number of escaped slaves. These followers were responsible for more damage than the organized portion of Sherman's army, including attrocities directed at civilians. They became so bad that one of Sherman's subordinates, (hard to believe but true) General Jefferson Davis (yes you saw that right, a Union general named after the Confederate President) ordered a pontoon bridge to be destroyed preventing them from crossing and following the army into Savanah. After capturing Fayetteville Sherman also sent them packing.

> In fact Sherman was quite fair to civilians provided they
> obeyed their local laws and did not resist or aid
> resistance.

Even if you limit the treatment to what Sherman officially permitted rather than what was done by the army, this is highly debatable. Legitimate military targets as Sherman defined them included industrial, transportation and storage facilities. Once Sherman moved through the area food, even in private homes and stores, became scarce, and without transportation it became harder to get food into the area, assuming the residents still had the means to pay for it.

> Atlanta was burned by southern troops,

This is only half true. The city suffered damage during the siege. When the Confederates withdrew they destroyed facilities where military supplies were stored. A number of other structures were destroyed in the process. When Sherman decided to march to the sea his army engaged in significant and purposeful destruction of much of what had survived the siege of Atlanta and the Confederate withdrawal. There is actual photographic evidence of this, made by photographers who followed Sherman's army.

> probably the same for Columbia SC, no one
> really knows for sure,

The historical record clearly indicates that Sherman's army engaged in the destruction of Columbia SC. What is debatable is the extent to which Confederates and others contributed to the destruction.

> but he did burn Jackson and Meridian, MS.

You are forgetting Fayetteville NC. Despite having previously ordered his army to "avoid wanton destruction" when it crossed into North Carolina, Sherman ordered "The Arsenal, all railroad property, all shops, factories and tanneries and all grist mills, save one, will be demolished.” The city's cotton mills were also destroyed. Ironically one of the groups hurt by this destruction was the city's free black artisans who worked for the industries that Sherman destroyed.

> It wasn't to starve the locals, which would've been a waste of time.

That may not have been the stated purpose, but Sherman knew it would be the effect.

What Sherman did in Georgia and the Carolinas, what Hunter and Sheridan did in the Shenandoah and in Loudoun County, and what other Union military commanders did elsewhere wasn't new to warfare. Armies had engaged in this kind of wanton destruction for thousands of years, and they did it again in later wars. It was however a change in the way the Civil War was being waged. Until that point there had been instances of civilians being robbed of valuables, animals and food by passing armies. What changed is that an activity that until that time activities that had been frowned upon or overlooked became policy.

And none of this has anything to do with whether Stuart should be renamed.

Conflating a person's skin color with their political views is a retarded argument. Of course people disagree with people who disagree with them. What the heck would their races have to do with it?

It's true. I have an original Xerox copy of the original document that was produced on an IBM Selectric.

In fact, the entire Civil War (or War of Northern Aggression for you traditionalists) was one big typo and should be replaced in history by the war for transgender civil rights of the early 21st century.

What we call the school is an unnecessary distraction. Whether it is called Stuart, Malcolm X, or Cesar Chavez we still have an underperforming school where the focus seems to be placed on just getting the kids diplomas rather than making sure the kids are properly educated for the next stage of their lives, be that college or the job market.

We're not celebrating him. We're acknowledging him as an important historical figure. HUGE difference.

For you who think the war was about slavery - you are wrong.

Abe originally wanted / tried / did:

1. To send all negroes back to Africa
2. If not, put all negroes into one area or state, as he believed they could not function in a civilized society (proof even today of that truth)
3. Freed ONLY the southern slaves, not the north AND any slaves that make it to the north are slaves once again

Abe only used the slaves as a political move when the opinions and motivation to fight were diminishing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-W5fGCAzOk

if you want to learn about slavery and how whites had very very little to do with it + the fact whites stopped slavery worldwide + how slavery was the "haves" and "have nots" then watch this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31E1gHowYcA

I know the snowflakes will not because the videos are too long and the factual history destroys their narrative
