If you are the parent of a new driver, here is a statistic you should know: 1,840 young drivers were involved in crashes in our county in 2016.

There was some good news about our young drivers last year:

Only 2% of teen drivers involved in a reportable crash were alcohol related.
97% of teen drivers were wearing their seat belts.
The total number of 17 and 18 year-old drivers involved in crashes in 2016 has gone down by almost 100 occurrences compared to 2015.
But there was also this:

Two youth drivers were killed and 17% were injured. Both fatal crashes involved excessive speed. One driver was 19, the other was 20.
This youth crash map shows the locations of crashes reported to the Fairfax County Police Department and their count at each location. Also note the 10 most dangerous county roadways for our young drivers.

Parents: You’ve been protecting your kids their whole lives; don’t just hand them the keys to a two-ton vehicle with no rules.

Young Drivers: Follow these rules so you don’t become a dot on next year’s map.

1. Drive Sober
Impairment begins with the first drink. It is unlawful for any person under the age of 21 to operate any motor vehicle after illegally consuming alcohol. Impaired drivers cause crashes that lead to injury, death and property damage. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of those crashes involve an underage drinking driver. NHTSA also reports that kids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash. Remember, drugged driving (under the influence of prescription, over-the-counter, or illegal narcotics) is equally as dangerous.

2. Distracted Driving
Have the talk about distracted driving. Did you know texting and driving is illegal in Virginia and most other states now, and that mobile phones or other devices may be illegal to use period depending on your age. Remember, distracted driving is not only texting, it is talking to passengers, operating a radio or GPS, doing makeup or hair…it is any behavior that detracts from the primary function of driving.

3. Vehicle Equipment Safety
Ensure that your young driver is aware of their vehicle’s equipment, limitations and its operational requirements. Operable windshield wipers, horn, brakes, lighting are just examples of a few considerations when keeping a vehicle functioning, safe and legal while increasing safety for everyone on our roadways. For more information visit the Virginia Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Program webpage.

4. Wear A Seatbelt
Parents, guardians and peers often serve to set an example to new drivers. Together, let us teach our youth to put their seatbelt on when they get in there vehicle for the first time and every time regardless if they are the driver or passenger. There is no reason to increase the possibility of injury or death if in a crash by simply not putting a seatbelt on.

What's interesting is that on both maps there appear to be very few crashes on the beltway. Are these reported differently and don't show up here or do teens just not take the beltway?

Where is the map showing the number of those youth car accidents where the OTHER driver was found to be at fault? Where is the map showing accidents by newly licensed drivers over 20? Where is the map showing accidents in Fairfax involving DC drivers? Maryland drivers? Out of DC Metro area drivers? Drivers who are in the U.S. illegally? Where is the map showing accidents by unlicensed drivers? Uninsured drivers? Where is the map showing accidents involving mothers talking on cell phones while driving? Most importantly where is the map showing accidents involving DRIVERS OVER 50? Or the graph comparing elderly driver involved accident rate per 100,000 miles driven to the accident rates for other age groups?

This is all a bunch of bull shit that is being pushed by the insurance companies. By pushing for information on the number of teenage driver involved accidents to be published while at the same time holding back data on other groups that are also have higher than normal accident rates they are trying to create the impression that there is a unique accident auto accident problem related to younger drivers to justify raising the minimum driving age to 18. Never mind that doing so will mean that drivers 18-25 will have far less driving experience because they will get their licenses right before most go away to college.

In case you think I am blowing smoke about the insurance company agenda, on at least two occasions we had state legislators show up at civic association meetings and volunteer that newly passed legislation imposing restrictions on young drivers was done at the express urging of insurance companies.

Sorry for the rant, but I think it is time someone started fighting back against this BS.

These maps are produced to show new drivers the number and location of accidents. This is also why the local High Schools are shown on the map.

This is just one point of view of accidents.

Most new drivers do very little Beltway or highway driving.

Most new drivers are back and forth to school, school activities, sports practices, friends and work.

Having sat through three of the new drivers ceremonies I am familiar with these maps, and they are not as innocent as you suggest.

"Slow down, phone down, arrive alive". "Drive safely this year and next year's map will have fewer dots". These certainly suggests that it is bad driving habits by young drivers that resulted in those dots being on the map. This is further emphasized by the fact the only specific accidents highlighted are those where the young drivers were at fault. However those dots do not distinguish between situations where drivers were being attentive and skillful and obeying the law and were hit anyways from those situations where the young drivers were at fault. Then if you look at the list of dangerous intersections for young drivers you will find several are also common locations for accidents that do not involve young drivers.

This is propoganda, plain and simple. And kids are smart enough to see through it, especially when they know from their friends the stories behind some of those dots.

So what's proved that anyone knows, youths don't have driving experience, some are serious, some are smart asses, some drink.

Bad things are going to happen, 1.1 million in Fairfax Co. alone. More coming.

There's plenty of adult wrecks at some of those spots as well.

They have been working on traffic safety since the 40's. Some things will never change. Talk to your children, teach them.
