I think it's a pretty hefty fine...but that's not a problem if you use a QUALITY radar detector (make sure it has the radar detector detector detector) so the pigs don't pick up your signal. I've used mine for 8 years and the bastards haven't caught up yet. Pulling 100+ MPH on 66 in the early hours cloaked in radar detector is a rush like no other. You can buy them online or in any other state in the Union. Some online shops don't ship to The Commonwealth of Virginia. I suggest only doing business with the companies that do (and you get to avoid paying the tax :-)

Actually the fine isn't that hefty. I got caught about 10 years ago and they confiscated it and fined me but the fine was under $100 and they gave back the detector. Now I use a battery operated detector that fits in my shirt pocket. It costs more but it's worth it.

Under $100 fine and they give you your detector back? Why doesn't everybody own one then? The cost and time you'll save by owning one will offset any legal infractions that may occur over the long term, unless you are just a wretched driver.

They won't help you escape speed traps using LIDAR. There is a LOT of it in FFC.

R Detector mounted on the windshield, was not connected and I was driving at 18mph in 25 mph zone, visual . in weber city Virgina, middle of nowhere, I wonder what the fine would be, would it increase my insurance permium, out of state license.

Get yourself a KD40 ,stealth RD, with laser descrambler. When VA is harassing drivers with fines for no other reason other than to build roads etc , this is crossing the line. This has nothing to do with safe driving. It's worth the cost of KD40. less than 2K. This is nothing compared to 3K max fine, miedemenor, jail time, loss of Driving privilege, loss of fed back ground clearance, losing your commercial driving license, all this becasue your alleged speed was above 80 mph.

I thought there was a Federal Law prohibiting the use of radar detectors in commercial vehicles. I could be wrong.

TITLE 49--TRANSPORTATION

CHAPTER III--FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

PART 392--DRIVING OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLES

Subpart G--Prohibited Practices

Sec. 392.71 Radar detectors; use and/or possession.
(a) No driver shall use a radar detector in a commercial motor vehicle, or operate a commercial motor vehicle that is equipped with or contains any radar detector.
(b) No motor carrier shall require or permit a driver to violate paragraph (a) of this section.

Clarification. If you are caught using a RD in your private vehicle, you will also loose your commercial license.
So get a KD40 stealth RD and lase defuser.

I guess radar detectors are not delivered by trucks... (transported by a commercial motor vehicle, hence the vehicle "contains" the detector).

I got pulled over for having the RD mounted on my windshield. It wasn't even on because I read the sign entering VA. None the less I got a ticket.

If you dont speed there is no need for a radar detector. Grow up..obey the speed limits..they are there for your protection and do not limit your freedom of movement.

I'm sure you have never gone over the speed limit in your life.

§ 46.2-1079. Radar detectors; demerit points not to be awarded.

"A. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth when such vehicle is equipped with any device or mechanism, passive or active, to detect or purposefully interfere with or diminish the measurement capabilities of any radar, laser, or other device or mechanism employed by law-enforcement personnel to measure the speed of motor vehicles on the highways of the Commonwealth for law-enforcement purposes. It shall be unlawful to use any such device or mechanism on any such motor vehicle on the highways. It shall be unlawful to sell any such device or mechanism in the Commonwealth. However, provisions of this section shall not apply to any receiver of radio waves utilized for lawful purposes to receive any signal from a frequency lawfully licensed by any state or federal agency."

It doesn't say what type of offense it is (misdemeanor, felony etc), but I think if you are caught with it you will probably be fined and/or have it confiscated. I'll read up on it, since it's actually kind of gotten my attention now.

There's a pretty simple test to show if it's a misdemeanor or felony... is any jail time POSSIBLE? No? Then it's a simple infraction.

I only said "misdemeanor or felony" as an example of what I meant by type of offense. I know it obviously wouldn't be a felony or capital offense..

I don't believe you would get jail time for it, probably just a ticket or have it confiscated. There is nothing in the Virginia Code Book regarding punishment for it, so it might up to the localities.

Of course I have..but I have never tried to make excuses...try to game the system so as to avoid detection. If I was ticketed...I aplogised to the officer...and paid my fine. The lesson in all that is to not speed...not game the system.

Actually, it has everything to do with enforcing the existing laws. If you don't like them, try and get the laws changed. It is a waste of time to bitch about police actually enforcing existing laws. That's their job.

It's easy to avoid this problem. Don't do more than 10MPH over the speed limit and if you're on I85, don't do more than 79 MPH. It's called cruise control. It's not rocket science.

It is incredible to me how people build such constitutional cases over just obeying the law. When you are outside...driving...walking the streets...you are in the public domain. What you do does effect others. Want to be free...stay home.

You should build a constitutional case against people who build constitutional cases. I'm sure there's an angle that would work. =P

I was ticketed in 1990 for speeding and posession of a radar detector. It is listed today as a Criminal Record. I was dismissed from a very highly paid, top tier defense contracting position for not disclosing my "criminal record' in Virginia. My aplication said it was not necessary to list Traffic Violations. Idid not know I even had a criminal record. So be aware that there is some huge room for misunderstanding by empl;oyers, especially if they use Peoplesmart.com

I've never understood the illegality of Radar Detectors in Virginia (and I believe the District). Aren't they legal just about everywhere else? The cat's kind of out of the bag.

Then again, I've found VA Police to be pretty fair when it comes to speed (as long as you keep it under 20+ or 80) so maybe it's an OK trade-off. Or I'm not speeding enough.

"The system" is gaming YOU, you passive idiot! It's gaming you for more and more money to feed the fat bureaucratic machine that run your little local obscure shitholes in VA. It's people like YOU that allow (actually encourage) our freedoms to be slowly eroded under the guise of the government 'protecting us.' You're just another veal with a soft underbelly awaiting slaughter by your local and state bureaucrats. Bow to them, but don't encourage others to follow your un-manish ways. If people like you proliferated back in the late 1700's, our currentcy would still have the Queen of England's picture on it!

I just got a radar detector ticket in some crap county on I 81 roughly mm 100 or so. It is $40 plus $50 court costs. The pigg asked me to give it to him and I refused; still have it. He turned on his radar from an overpass and saw me suddenly slow down and get in the right lane. The pigg's name is Tarrell. A Virginia State Pig. Had a canine unit patch on his uniform. Gave me a ticket too for 80 in a 70. I am sure he didn't get a lock on me, it beeped only a little. He wrote a corrupt speeding ticket for me as well, another $60. No way to prove this, the court people and pigs all know each other and live off the interstate highway traffic and I am going to pay them off as I have no chance in their insular court but I do hate them very much. I am from FL. Amazingly, he didn't ransack my car. My Escort 9500 cannot defend me from corrupt police; I have a total hate for them in my heart and feel no pity for them when they're run over or shot down.

the Cop was cool and gave me a choice of a $1000 fine or be banned from Arthur Treacher's for one year. It sucked peeling off those 10 bills but I drove straight to Arthur Treacher's pigged out on some delicious Cod fish and got my revenge. Yeah, that cop will know better than to fuck with me again...
