Good luck getting authentic mexican in the south. You're going to have to go to the southwest to get that.

MS13's secret to a good tamale is to add extra gun powder.

You don't know tamales.
First, 'authentic mexican' can only be found in one country, Mexico.

Second, tamales have been in the 'south' for well over a hundred years.
They were introduced through shipping to Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta then went all the way up to Chicago as a staple.
The Aztecs, Mayans and even Cherokee had different versions throughout North and Central America.

It's rubbish to say you can only find 'authentic' tamales in the southwest.

So back to OP's question: where can one find good tamales in the area? The good news is that even crappy tamales are usually not bad. But I haven't found really good ones around here.

Had some great ones in San Diego about 15 years ago; a couple years later, went to the same restaurant, and they apologized--the tamale lady was sick that day. They took their tamales seriously!

ABC Canteen in the old Arthur Treacher's building in Fairfax Circle has good pork and chicken tamales. The don't get stingy on the meat.

The best tamales are made at Lupita's tamales in Canutillo, TX just west of El Paso on State Highway 20 just before the New Mexico state line, and not that far past Rosa's Cantina.
