He/she can't define it becasue they don't care enough to educate themselves on the issue before getting into an argument. Ask any high school debate team how that ends.

Technically, a 15 year old cannot buy an AR-15 but grandpa could buy it for him and give it to him as a present. The FFL forms would say the grandfather is the legal purchaser. Not sure about how ownership is defined since I've never bought a gun for someone else. This happens all the time with .22's, grandpa buys his grandson a .22 and gives it to him for Christmas and no one has any problem with that.

One could make an argument that the .22 is worse since the .22 is very easy to shoot and a lot of them come out of the box as tack drivers. An AR style rifle is also fairly easy to shoot but not as easy to control as the .22. Plus the .22 ammo is just about everywhere and it costs about $18 for 500. You could carry several thousand rounds of ammo and extra magazines in a single backpack yet no one wants to ban the Ruger 10/22.
