Drugs in Fairfax

This is a scary story - not local, but related to local issues. FCPS now allows kids to bring their own prescription drugs to school. Maybe this is not such a good idea. Let's not make it easier for kids to get hooked on pills.

Looks like there is a local ADHD medication abuse treatment program. Actually, the web site says there are now FIVE Adderall rehab facilities in Fairfax alone. http://www.addiction-treatment.com/find/adderall/fairfax-va/

The problem must be more common than we hear about.

They have to be monitored and administered by a nurse in ffx county dumbass. Get a life and worry about watching what your kids do instead of being paranoid of school nurses giving the kids perscriptions they need.

I don't know if your basic premise is correct (FCPS allowing kids to bring prescription pills to school), but your illogical knee-jerk reaction isn't helping your case. It doesn't matter where kids take pills, the gross over prescription is the problem - not the school system.

Could you possibly find a more unreliable site? And nowhere does it say that these places specifically treat Adderall addiction.

It probably is. Psychiatrists now are glorified pill pushers. But your complete lack of understanding of the entire issue shows incredible ignorance. You use a stupid premise to come to conclusion unsupported by fact (at least as presented by you).

You bring up a valid concern. But if you can't present a coherent argument, please stay out of it.

Not at all in the know about adderall, except that one of the Redskins' defensive backs was suspended for taking it with a prescription. The way he played prior to his suspension leads me to believe it's good stuff.

The paradox of course is the better the stuff, the more dangerous and addictive it is.

An episode of drugs inc. chronicled a hollywood doctor overprescribing adderall to many movie stars. He claimed he got addicted himself. Of course, he also got busted.

These kids should not be bringing that stuff to school because that doctor on drugs inc. said it's like methamphetamine which is about the most addictive drug known.

We need action now!!

This is why parents allow Doctors to prescribe them to their children.
Better living thru chemistry.
Every kid in Fairfax should be drugged.
And the parents too for having them.

From the Fairfax County Youth Survey...

"In Fairfax County, the rates of use of drugs other than alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and inhalants are comparatively low."

"• Lifetime Use:
For students in Fairfax County, the highest percentage of self-reported lifetime usage was for prescription drugs other than painkillers (8.5 percent), painkillers (8.3 percent), and over-the-counter drugs (5.4 percent). The lowest percentages reported were for heroin use (1.3 percent) and steroid use (1.5 percent)."

8.3% abusing pain meds and 8.5% abusing other prescription meds may be "comparatively low" to marijuana and tobacco, but sure doesn't sound low. That is a lot of kids abusing "legal" meds.I would guess that a lot of the other prescription drugs were ADD meds, but I don't know all the other prescription meds people abuse.

Not trying to make a case, just raising a concern. I would guess that when more kids bring their prescription pain and ADD meds to school the more likely some kids may share/receive/abuse them. Reading the Times article just alerted me to some of the dangers.
