Last winter, FAA made unannounced changes without allowing public comment to the aircraft departure pattern at Reagan Airport (DCA). The new FAA departure pattern concentrated aircraft departures into narrow channels transiting neighborhoods from Mount Vernon, Franconia, Newington, Springfield, through Burke.
This new pattern requires planes to noisily climb out over these neighborhoods is a long train of aircraft - rather than being disbursed over a wider area as was the pattern for years. The new FAA program is "FAA NextGen." (Suggest google FAA Nextgen noise complaints). The FAA pattern change is intended to save airlines fuel costs by allowing commercial planes to shortcut across these neighborhoods at low altitude (4000') rather than requiring planes to climb out over the Potomac River and turn landward at a more quiet 7500'.
After hundreds of complaints from Fairfax, Alexandria and Arlington residents - FAA scheduled one (1) public meeting in Northern Virginia - tonight. Of course FAA and the airlines did little to publicize the noise complaint meeting.
MEETING: The FAA will hold a series of community workshops, which will be held locally in September. A public workshop will be held in DC, in Virginia, and in Maryland. The Virginia meeting is tonight at:
