Lenten Fish Fry on Fridays?
Posted by: FishFryKing ()

So Lent is here again, and a tradition where I grew up (around Pittsburgh) was that every church, fire hall, and VFW, regardless of denomination or association, would have a fish fry on Fridays. Battered and deep fried fish, fries, cole slaw, haluski, mac & cheese, and perogies are menu regulars. It started as part of the Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during the weeks leading up to Easter, but the food is just so damn good that it is enjoyed by thousands with no regard to religious affiliation.

So with all of the Pittsburgh transplants down here, I was surprised to see a complete lack of Friday Fish Fries in this area. Not a single Catholic church seems to partake in this, let alone fire halls or other community centers. Anyone know of anything like this? Will travel far and wide across Nova to enjoy one!!

Let me see. For a good fish fry, on any particular Friday during lent, head up 123, turn onto route 7, head west. Go to 15, head north, go a little bit, go a little bit more, keep going, then you hit this street called Route 70, and then keep going, and then you're in Pittsburgh.

No, it isn't. There are lots of even dumber ones. But for mouthwatering mounds of great fish any time, it's Horace and Dickies at 12th and H NE.

I am also from the north and looking for a good fish fry - preferably at a church, legion hall, etc. Not some chain restaurant as suggested above. This simply does not seem to be something that is done here. Maybe in Pungo where people still work together on projects like this? ANYONE know where these might be advertised? A lot of us would attend, but just need to know about these functions.

like a huge untapped market. You could make what, dozens of dollars off of selling fried fish?

This is going to be semi-helpful, but there's a church off of Gallows that does this. Near INOVA, maybe woodburn road. I don't remember them having fish, but definitely peirogi and other things.

Yes, the Eastern Orthodox church sells meatless meals on Fridays during Lent. Their Haluski noodles and homemade perogies are wonderful.

St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church has been doing the Friday fish fry during Lent for the past few years, and is doing them again this year. The fish fry is in Heller Hall (5:00 to 7:00 p.m.), which is in the school directly across the street (Spring Street) from the church.
