Old Town Fairfax City Streets becoming two-way
Posted by: Kevin ()
Date: July 18, 2006 12:03PM

I just found out that, on August 7th, the streets in old town fairfax city will no longer be one-way, but will be bi-directional. Having driven the one-way streets my whole life, this will be an interesting change.

I've attached a schematic I obtained on the new traffic pattern, as well as a cheap Google Earth overlay I made with MS Paint (I know, it's ugly. Sorry - I wish I had Photoshop).

Just FYI.

great... now all that's left is to close up the three intersecting streets that turn onto main street and change the limit to 40MPH. seriously, do we NEED to have three streets all 30ft appart?

I'm eagerly waiting for the college girls to come back, Auld Shebeen has been hurting lately

Anybody checked it out yet? I did today and I think it would be wise to add some time to your commute if you go thrugh Fairfax City....or avoid it altogether.

There are some turns I can no longer make in a semi....like a right from Rt 123 northbound onto Main Street eastbound.

Gives me a headache just seeing it on a map cant imagine it for real. I usually just avoid it if I am going north or south of the city by taking the fairfax parkway and getting off at 29 to be north or braddock road to be south.

Does this mean they are becoming two-way, or that they switch direction depending on morning or evening rush hour? It seems like the streets through old town Fairfax are too narrow to go both directions at once.

I drove through it today. Cops were directing everyone for some reason, and it took a LONG time to get through it.

They have become two-way - not alternating depending on time of day.

They're not too narrow, rather it just seems smarter to have kept them each one way. Now we have two roads handling half the capacity they once did. Mathematically that works out to be the same, but in application it certainly will not.

I'll give it a year or so before they switch it back to one-way roads like they used to be.

Oy! Maybe in time this will get better, but coming from the area around Van Dyck Park around 6pm last night (Sunday) heading towards Red, Hot and Blue took nearly 45 minutes. It seemed like the lights were only letting one car at a time go through the intersection before it turned red.

I think they reduced the capacity of Main St by more than half. What was three lanes one way is now one lane in each direction (granted, one eastbound lane ended at Old Lee Hwy) plus a left turn lane.

Any old timers here?.....I'm pretty sure that this new pattern is really just returning to the way it was many moons ago.

Yesterday I saw some dumbass in a pickup on North Street next to Auld Shebeen realize he was in the wrong lane (he was right on 123, someone could easily have plowed him). He slammed it in reverse, dug his tail into the parking lot, and spun back to the right side of the road. They painted the lines clearly, but this dick was probably on his cell or chugging a PBR.

Photoshop, shmotoshop. Just download the GIMP (www.gimp.org). It's free, open source, available for Linux, Windoze, Mac, and has all the same features as Photoshop. Did I mention it's free?

GIMP is shit. the GUI is counterintuitive. Krita is much better, though a bit quirky, but ultimately Photoshop is FAR superior to both. im not going to discuss this further because everyone ive met that likes gimp is a zealot that cant admit to anything wrong with gimp.

Krita doesn't have Windoze port, though, so if you're stuck somewhere where you can't use Linux you're SOL. As for being counterintuitive, GIMP is really just counterPhotoshop. It's not like PS actually designed the world's best interface. If you've never used PS, you won't know you're "missing" anything.

who cares about windows? besides, havent you heard of VNC? i can access my pc anywhere. besides, GIMP is horribly unstable on windows.

really? please tell me how you make a line in GIMP. in photoshop it's a button in the toolbar as it's a standard operation.

only zealots think that. everyone else cant use it to do most anything.

ive worked with photoshop and it's easy to do basic things, not true for GIMP.

think im the only one that feels this way?

"I find the GIMP invaluable, and also maddeningly unintuitive. I’ve been using it for years and can still barely do anything with it." -- Steve Yegge (author of Wyvern (an award-winning MMORPG) and has a popular weblog about programming.)

---------- IRC conversation -----------
07:00 < Gravis> ha! even renowned programmers think GIMP is "maddeningly unintuitive"
07:01 <@fugu> um, "it is"
07:02 < Gravis> but seriously, if anyone, dont you think those GIMP tools (pun intended) would listen to famous programmers?
07:02 <@fugu> no.
07:02 < Gravis> yes, they would... if they listened to anyone.
07:03 <@fugu> if you write a program, you write it so that you can use it.
07:03 <@fugu> whoever wrote it the interface, did so for some reasons
07:03 <@fugu> not saying that they are good reasons.
07:03 <@fugu> or that they are transferable, or anything
07:04 < Gravis> maybe they are just masochists
07:04 <@fugu> maybe it's a social experiement
07:04 <@fugu> "hhaahahaha! let's see how far we can go and still have people using it!"
07:04 < Gravis> i would believe that more than "it's a good interface if you would just RTFM"

Dude, this isn't supposed to be a thread about GIMP. I'm not a GIMP evangelist, I just think it's a damn good tool for the price. I thought the dude should know there's free alternatives out there. As for "who cares about Windows," well, I do. It's all I can use at work--we're Windows only. Do I want to go through all the trouble of figuring out how to configure VNC? No. I just downloaded the GIMP installer, ran it, end of story. I can now essentially Photoshop. Since I've never used PS, I've no clue how to draw a line in it either. As I recall, it wasn't terribly difficult to figure out in GIMP.

I'm not one of those retards that has an infinite amount of time to tweak every little setting on his computer and install all kinds of supplementary crap. I needed to shop a photo, and inside of TWO MINUTES I was doing it with GIMP. How much easier does it get? And I've never had it crash on any platform except LINUX.

It's free software. I don't expect it to be polished. I'm not going to complain. OK, I'll complain about LINUX, but that's an OS, not an application.

Try the GIMP. The GIMP is good.

Gravis was just attempting to ridicule people for having blind loyalty to a specific software, without recognizing the benefits of alternatives.

Sort of like those losers that are "all linux, all the time". Those guys are the textbook example of software sheep.

Oh wait.

If you had a P2P file sharing thing, you could probably download PS for free.
