Summer Swim Parents are Crazy
Posted by: Flipper ()
Date: June 30, 2014 08:43AM

I know this will cause widespread angst.

Seriously summer swim parents are in a league all their own. Then again so are most sports in this county.

Parents if you are putting your kids in a $175 FS for a summer league meet you need to be in therapy. Please go get help. This happens with little 8 year olds too.

Therapy Now!

I pay $450 for June-Aug for the local pool. June July with all the swim and dive meets, events and fundraisers Im lucky to even be able to get in the pool. Swim/Dive parents own the pools not you and me. They strut around like its their pool and Im a guest. The kids can be a little snotty too - like its their pool.

I agree with worldarevoles. I frequently can't get a lane to do laps at my pool. they are tied up with private lessons for hours on end. Lessons that frequently involve using about 10 feet of the lane. Those could be done off the side of the pool. I used to teach lessons and that is what I did.

Sometimes they will drop another lane divider for me. Thank you, guards. I pay dearly for this summer membership and this goes on and on and on and on.

And yes, it seems there is always something going on with swim team tying up the pool and the grounds. I have to plan things very carefully.

that said, my kids loved swim team and I thoroughly enjoyed helping out as a parent. it was worth the fee I paid to cover the coaches salaries, etc.

I have found that too, unless the swimmers participate in a quality year-round program as well, such as the Shark Tank. Year round programs like the Tank produce swimmers who are responsible and team oriented, and generally have supportive families who are very involved.

Even with the year round programs there are parents who act like NVSL is the Olympics and everything exists for their kid to sprint a 50 and rise to glory.

Summer swim is to teach community, sportsmanship, a great life skill.

Only in FFX do we turn it into something nasty and insane. I heard there was a big fight in one of upper divisions. Is that true?

All of the more than 100 NVSL pools are family oriented venues. If you want to swim laps, some pools may have early morning or early evening hours set aside for that, but a better bet would be to go to the Y or a rec center or to get yourself a gym membership.

NVSL teams typically have five meets per season against other area pools. There are also post-season events for those who qualify and end-of-season awards parties and all that. Also, there are practices many days a week. The purpose of NVSL is actually to give kids something to do in the summer. For those who like to swim, it's a great opportunity to be in the water, to build on your skills, and to hang with your friends.

If you can't handle NVSL, I'd suggest that you never become involved in winter swim or in any high school swim program.

Swim Team Families should pay a lot more. They use the pool exclusively 5 days a week for practice and they close the pool weekly for swim and dive meets. Basically they use the pool (to the exclusion of everyone else) 20 hours a week during June and July. They pay $150 bucks per person for that. A summer camp using those resources would charge $400 per week for that use of facilities and staff.

I say charge each member of the swim team at least a couple hundred per week they are sucking up resources at the pool...

If you can't get a lane or just need to hit the pool and it's too crowded, try Lake Barcroft. Just be sure to rinse off afterward and everything should be fine.

What an idiot!!!

Real swimmers, the ones whom colleges recruit, come from USA Swimming and not a summer swim or high school program. This is a cold hard fact.

Hopefully that post was from someone who truly does not know.

If it is from some NVSL parent, then you have made my point.

You know nothing about the sport. I personally would love to see this little superstar sprinters doing the 500 or better yet the mile.

Summer is great for team building, sportsmanship, etc. Lots of fun. A time honored tradition. It is the parents who turn it into some kind of pre-Olympic competition that need help.

Plus annual dues of $500+ on top of the perhaps three times that required to secure a membership to begin with, if indeed any are available. But if you don't like how your pool is being run, campaign for election to the board. Of course, you'd have to become a member first.

The pool exists for them, not you, you selfish -- how you say -- asshole.

Most of the practices are in the morning before the pool opens. Some have afternoon practice, which shuts down at least part of the pool. The meets are Saturday morning when the pool is closed. There are developmental meets a few evenings over the course of the summer.

We share the usage of the pool. It is a community pool. It is made clear that the pool might be closed occasionally for private and special events. Sometimes you just have to roll with it. The Rec Centers with pools are still open for laps or family time in a pinch.

See the word NEVER hiding out in there?

> Real swimmers, the ones whom colleges recruit,

Here's another one. Most NVSL swimmers have neither the desire nor the talent to become big time swimmers. Just as most Little Leaguers will never actually play for the Yankees. But even those exceptional swimmers who also do high-level programs can be found at local pools and swimming for local high schools. It's a friends sort of thing. Those who don't have any friends might not understand.

Parents cheer for their kids and their teams. At least the ones who aren't volunteering as starters, timers, stroke-and-turn judges or some such. All that is really kind of a natural thing, and I don't really think it was any of those folks who turned you into such a majorly fucktarded asshole. I think you just came that way, so fuck off with your over-inflated self, you disgraceful moron.

We don't suck up no resources. We have memberships available and it don't cost no $150 bucks to join the team here at Pinewood Lake. Damn good team and coaches too.

You did say Never
And you ate correct. It's NVSL parents that behave worse. And high school a close second.

Most year round parents have kids who have been in meets with Ledecky and Seilskar. When you compete with them there is true perspective. It's the FFX parent syndrome. Summer swim just current example.

Aren't you at all worried about exposing your children to all these perverted old men swim coaches that have been molesting our kids lately?

There was the one in MoCo last year then the other here in FFX Co a few years back.

God knows how many other just haven't been stupid enough to get caught yet.

Swim coaches make Catholic priests look tame.

If you want a pool all to yourself and do whatever you want and not have to deal with the needs of others you need to install a pool in your backyard. Plain and simple.

Admitting an error? Your FFXU privileges will be revoked for that, I'm sure. But the effort is appreciated nonetheless.

> And you ate correct. It's NVSL parents that behave
> worse. And high school a close second.

NVSL is essentially a rec league where kids get wet and socialize and learn to compete and cooperate. At age 6, they don't know yet if they like swimming more than jumping in and splashing. This is where they begin to find out. Having a kid will meanwhile not turn a jerk into a non-jerk, so you will find some jerks among parents. Most however are ordinary and perfectly nice people. High school swim is more complex. But compare to football or basketball then come and complain about swim parents.

Seliskar and Ledecky are high school swimmers. All stars are nice to have at high school meets of course, but titles are won on the basis of depth. You need points from a bunch of people. And most of those who lived here at the time will have come up through NVSL.

After 15 years and having all my children go through summer swimming as well as year round swimming, I can honestly make the following observations:

- The younger kids and parents are fun to watch. The joy of them achieving is nice.
- The year round swimmers like summer swimming because its easy and fun.
- Parents live through their kids and it's funny but sad to watch.
- The car decoration, themes and pep rally's leave lasting impressions on the kids and parents.
- Its truly a family event with multi-generations coming to watch.

Which kind of Swim Mom do you consider your favorite? I am partial to the Party Girl and Flirt...

The Hard Core Swim Mom:

It doesn't matter if this mom has on shorts from Target or Gucci; her identifying trait is the stopwatch she carries. She’s constantly timing her kid and has graphs of his/her best times on her phone along with the app “On Deck” to update her 24/7 on the competitive swim scene. The stopwatch surveillance wouldn't be so bad if she did it in stealth mode. But, no, usually the Hard Core Swim Mom has a set of lungs so powerful a blue whale might get a severe case of envy. She shouts, she screeches and, if that’s not annoying enough, she’s been known to utilize noise-making devices like a bull horn or cow bell as she paces the pool lane bellowing instructions and blasting sound effects at her child. She’ll tell anyone who complains that her noise-making is a way to encourage her kid. But everyone knows it’s code for “you better move your ….”

The Fashionistas:

For these moms, it’s not a swim meet. It’s a fashion event, and there’s no better way to cheer on your kid than by wearing matching Lilly Pulitzer outfits that fit in with the club’s swim team’s color motif of green and white. Accessories are also important. Jewelry is coordinated to match the team’s colors. Lucky are the Carriage Club moms who are also Kappa Kappa Gamma alumnae. That means they already have loads of diamond and sapphire jewelry to go with the team’s blue and white.

Party Girl:

It’s hard to blame parents for losing track of how many mojitos they've imbibed. The swim meets last for hours, and it’s usually 90 degrees in the shade. We all know Fun + Sun = Rum. This means you can count on there being a contingent of parents participating in a medley relay of booze. If you've ever wondered what someone was like in college, their swim meet behavior is usually a pretty decent clue. Teams have in the past (like last year) had to gently remind parents that their club was getting the reputation of being a little too "drinky" and they may want to switch to hydrating themselves with a liquid that wasn't 80 proof.

The Flirt:

This is the only mom who actually wears a swimsuit to a swim meet. She’s got on a bikini, a beachy straw cowboy hat and, of course, a sandal with a heel. When not bending over a pool lane to cheer her cherubs on and affording everyone poolside an unobstructed view of her charms, she’s busy flirting with the dads. Her scorecard is not how many races her kids won, but how many men bought her drinks.

The Club Climber:

The grass is always greener at another country club. Or at least that’s what this club aspirational mom thinks. She’s uses the “away” swim meets as a chance to work the poolside and begin her campaign to find a country club proposer and sponsor. She’ll need at least two to help her wedge her Tory Burch flip-flops a rung higher on that club-climbing ladder.

Shamps Time:

For the ultimate swim team mom congregation, you need look no further than the swim team championships held in July. This is the pinnacle of the swim season, and the championships rotate every year from club to club. Although in country club vernacular, they are referred as shamps. Not champs, but shamps. This event is resplendent with an opening ceremony that has, in the past, included bagpipers, circus performers and bands that have performed at the Super Bowl. (Take that, Sochi.) If you hear women this summer saying shamps over and over again you can correctly surmise they are a country club swim team mom and not suffering from a speech impediment. Smile at them and be kind. These poor souls are having to wear makeup and heels to the pool.

You hit all this right on the money. we used to do a margarita stand as a fundraiser and made a bunch of money.

I usually looked like a drowned rat after timing, taking a shower, working the concession stand, etc. I was the exception to all this.

This is the way it is at our pool. The only time the pool is closed is for the Monday night "B" meets and I think ours is only hosting one this summer. After school is out, all of the practices are before the pool opens. When school is still in session they only use three lanes in the afternoon.

Swim team is only $90. $150 does sound a bit high.

W-H-A-T is an MILF?
The moms description is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time.

Let's talk about the dads and their beer guts doing cannonballs off the diving board and putting sunblock on their poor balding heads and slaving over the grill like the wonderful dads they are.

And then there are the ribbon ladies clustered under the only umbrellas at the pool. they confiscate them.

None of the referenced parents have chimed in. Oh wait. It's a B meet night for some. Gotta be sure their little darlings remain at the top of the ladder. Ladder rates kids from best to worse. Again it's FFX. Everything here is about being the best. At everything. The Best. Thus the fast suit craziness. Air conditioned campers for 90 degree heat

I still wanna know about the fight in upper division. Were there injuries. Is it true.

I'm not sure where you swim but I cannot recall alcohol ever being served at meets. Whether it was brought in is another matter. And I'm not sure what is wrong with food service at swim meets.

While I've heard of some pools going crazy over their swim or dive programs, there are a number of others that tone it down. If you feel that your swim club overemphasizes the swim or dive program, there are a number of others you could join.

There was not obvious drinking at our meets. We ran the aforementioned margarita stand as a fundraiser for swim team at a pool function. I never saw anybody trashed at swim meets.

The snack bar was great at the meets. hot dogs, burgers, etc. It ran all through the meet.

You got it mixed up.

The margarita stand was at a pool party and there was very obvious drinking and it was totally agreed upon and it was a fundraiser for the swim team.

The margarita stand was not running during swim meets. No problemo...

Both, but the kids weren't drinking of course. Even though there were virgin margaritas available. They were just bringing drinks from the margarita stand to the parents.

Do you have a liquor license with the State? Is anyone certified with the County as a food manager? Did you charge a sales tax on each margarita? This needs to be investigated!

if the pool policy is that alcohol is allowed at family events, then we are running a margarita stand gosh darn it. Get over it. These are private pools.

What does homeless have to do with this? Okay, next time, skip paying for your kid to do swim and have him or her give the money--personally--to the first homeless they see.

Or in all seriousness, if you're concerned about the homeless then have the party portion as part of a fundraiser for one of the local shelters. Charge a few extra bucks and make a donation. But don't just get all pissy because you don't like people having a few drinks when they socialize. It's people like you who suck the fun out of these events and then wonder why we can't get enough parents to help out.

Not you, but "What a relief Ex", the person who asked, "I for one I'm relieved we can grant licenses fir stuff like this. But we can't feed homeless. Gotta love FFX".

Not only was her (sounds like a her) comment irrelevant but also inaccurate. We can feed the homeless and do every day. That's why we don't see piles of dead bodies all around the county. At least not where that local contractor hasn't been.

Sorry, but even if you are "accepting donations" at a "private club", you are still supposed to have a license.

It's not difficult to get. You can complete the information online. After the information is submitted you will be contacted by an LCB agent to complete the license.

Chances are that it won't matter because you won't get caught. However I would suggest you don't plan on relying on that defense.
