True, but 8th inning reliever Kelley was the real culprit.

Should be soon - i think the trade deadline is on 1 Aug and there are lots of rumors about the Yankees closer. We can't go to the playoffs with who we have now.

Through the end of the 2016 season. Blocked Lerners are on the hook for the rest of his contract and they are too cheap to pay him nearly $4 million to not pitch.

Cheap blocked Lerners will never do what it takes to win a world series.

You can't tie the GM's hand, not let him add payroll in July/August to address your weaknesses, and expect to win when it really matters.

Nobody in MLB will take Papelbon and that contract. A better question is...why is a guy who was here for 5 minutes and put his hands on the throat of the franchise allowed to continue to play here? Bryce Harper will not stay in DC and when he departs he will cite the failure to cut Papelbon following choke-gate as the reason.

Idiots. Papelbon is playing for a bargain-basement $13 million this year, most of which has already been paid out. He's a free agent at the end of the season, so no further commitments there. Aroldis Chapman is making an even more ridiculous $11.3 million this year and is also a free agent at season's end. He throws harder than Pepelbon does, but he's not actually any better. Sending some boatload of actual prospects (e.g. Fedde) off to New York for him would be a bad idea. There are closers and closers-in-waiting out there who would do as well and cost a lot less. That would be the smarter way to go.

Contractually, he will stay in DC through the end of the 2018 season, and the Nats may well pull off a Strasburg-like extension by then. But lets face the facts here -- Harper is one of the big reasons why the Nats are in such a troubled state these days. He was the Player of the Month in April, but then hit an anemic .200 in May. Rebounded to a solid .280 in June, but has regressed to an awful .203 in July. He bears no resemblance at all to the "MVP in the DMV" that we saw last year. Mediocre pitchers are hanging oh-fers on him routinely. He's not getting those intentional walks these days because nobody is afraid of him anymore.

To be sure, Harper has company in swinging like a rusty gate. Aside from Murphy and Ramos, there has not been a dependable hitter to be found. Good as it generally is, the pitching cannot hold the club up all by itself. Next up is a nine-game road trip to CLE, SF and ARZ. As is, we'll be lucky to win one game in each city. Even luckier if we are in first place still when the team gets back. Rizzo has about a week in which to pull a rabbit or two out of his hat.
