Once the drastic momentum swings were over and the Robinson boys’ lacrosse team had somehow wiped out two daunting deficits Tuesday night, senior Danny Krug approached fellow captain Johnny Daniel on the sideline in overtime and hatched a simple scheme to complete a crazy comeback.

Krug planned to get the ball to Daniel and then told him “to do something with it.”

Daniel didn’t disappoint, knifing through a double team just 30 seconds into overtime for a goal that propelled Robinson to a thrilling 15-14 win over W.T. Woodson in the Virginia 6A North region final in Fairfax.

The Rams trailed 13-6 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter before mounting a rally. Robinson (18-2) scored seven straight goals, and senior Austin Henry sent the game to overtime by scoring his fifth goal with 1 minute 14 seconds remaining in regulation.

“That overtime feeling, there’s nothing like it,” Daniel said. “I don’t know how it went in. I’m just happy it did.”

Initially, this seemed like an evening that would belong to the Cavaliers (16-5). Woodson controlled possession and jumped to a 6-1 lead behind the offensive exploits of junior Jackson Miller, senior Noah Guttendorf and sophomore Robert Solomon.

Miller provided the highlight of the early surge when he scored on a backhanded finish while leaping across the crease.

But Robinson charged into the second quarter, scoring five consecutive times and tying the game at 6 on an end-to-end goal by midfielder Devin Townsend. Woodson answered, taking the lead back before halftime and storming out of the locker room for the third quarter.

The Cavaliers grabbed faceoff after faceoff to start the second half and left the Rams’ defense looking confused during a seven-goal run that ended with Miller finding Solomon wide open in front of the net.

Just when Robinson looked defeated, though, Daniel re-emerged. He scored on a laser from long range as he was being hit in the head and drew a two-minute penalty on Woodson that led to two more extra-man goals to end the third quarter.

From there, the Cavaliers were on their heels. Robinson scored three more goals in opening five minutes of the fourth quarter, and freshman Declan Connolly tied the score at 13 on a shot as he fell to the turf.

But Miller wouldn’t let Woodson crumble quietly. Less than 30 seconds later, he backed down two defenders and fed Guttendorf to give the Cavaliers a one-goal lead with 5:25 left in regulation.

The Rams hit the crossbar twice before Henry’s game-tying goal set the stage for Daniel’s heroics.

“Something about being down sparks a new beast inside the team and shows what kind of team we really are,” Daniel said.

Robinson girls cruise
The Robinson girls’ team showed its relentless side during an 18-7 win over Woodson on Tuesday in the first-half of the region final double-header in Fairfax. Powered by a quartet of weapons on attack, the Rams raced to an 8-0 lead and were not threatened en route to a second straight Virginia 6A North title.

Seniors Katie Checkosky, Taylor Caskey and Kaitlin Luccarelli and junior Elli Kluegel all finished with at least five points and turned the region final into a running clock situation before the first half ended. Robinson (19-0) hoped to fix its penchant for slow starts against Woodson (13-4) and left satisfied heading into next week’s state tournament.

“Everyone went into it knowing we were going to play with intensity and speed,” Caskey said. “These are the important games. These are the ones where we really have to show up to play.”
