Mundane view from across the river

Why are our local news stations using National Harbor as their studio backdrop now? Most major-market cities have ferris wheels so what’s the big deal? That part of PG Co was a swamp 10 years ago. It wouldn’t surprise me if kickbacks were involved.

and now aren’t they building a Harbor II just up the hill? A City-in-a-day.

It always cracks me up when the Redskins play a Monday Night Football game at home and the MNF crew use that camera shot based out of Arlington, VA looking across the river at a DC monument for a game being played in Landover, MD.

No different than NY Giants and Jets games using the Manhattan skyline to advertise the game. Or the Pats using Boston's harbor shots during games.

Foxboro's even farther away, like Manassas-far-away from Boston.

Or the Cowboys. That stadium is way the heck out there in suburbia, like 30 minutes away from Dallas.

And the difference would be that it involves three states (actually one state, one commonwealth and one district) verses two.

You're either stupid or you don't know what a swamp is.

The National Harbor site was always the spring-fed deep water cove that it is today. It's official name is Smoot Bay and it was a mecca for boaters and water skiers back in the day (it was the closest place to DC to waterski legally). I've seen hundreds of boats beached and anchored in that cove on a nice weekend. I hung out in Smoot Bay from the late 50's through the 90's.

Any nice summer weekend there would be hundreds of boats in Smoot Bay, anchored or beached and all kinds of parties, bonfires, etc going on. Rope swings on some of the trees. Trees, sky, and water, and later the Beltway/WW Bridge, were all you could from the cove.

National Harbor totally fucked up a beautiful spot that many people enjoyed for many years.

Smoot Bay is spring fed? So in addition to the Potomac, there is a spring pumping water into it? Where exactly is the spring, and does that mean the water is cleaner/cooler there?

According to Frederick Tilp in his 1978 book "This was Potomac River" (ISBN 0-9601786-1-9), there are three underwater springs in the Potomac River. These under-river springs scour "holes" of varying depths.

1) 80 foot hole about 1000 feet north of Key Bridge

2) 30 foot hole in Smoot Bay, MD east of Jones Point, VA

3) 120 foot hole 2 miles south of Windmill Point on Port Tobacco Creek

I have a summer assignment for you. Survey Smoot Bay and look for that 30 foot hole and you will find the underwater spring!

Not a troll. I have my copy of "This was Potomac River" right here. The under-river springs are mentioned on page 246.

I'll confess that I do not know where the 30 foot hole is. It's been more than 20 years since I hung out at "The Blue Plains Swim Club" aka Smoot Bay. Plus I'm over 70 years old and the old memory isn't what it used to be.

I do remember people talking about the "hole" or the "deep spot" but I don't recall ever hearing the term "spring". Personally, I would have been ignorant of the existence of under-river springs had I not read Mr Tilp's book.

If I was going to look for it, I think I would start near the perimeter of the cove. near shore and work outwards toward the river. As you know, there is a big wedge-shaped sand bar extending from the bridge down to the big red buoy...I don't think it would be out that far, but who knows?

Plus the construction of the new bridge and National Harbor could have changed things...

MD has built SEVERAL casino OWNED BY THE STATE OF MD using illegal labor using TAXPAYER MONEY

YOU WILL FIND IN THE FUTURE A CLAIM OF POVERTY AND SLY SALE OF THESE TO PRIVATE HANDS

nothing they did was "by mistake", nor the lameness of Pepco: the MD lawmakers are famous and being rich and looking down on the denizens, making top down laws - insulting laws like "mandatory purchase of MARYLAND run car insurance for 2x the price"

NY has given loans to their politicians to buy farms in VA (later sold and "became congress"

MD has given loans to illegals to takeover farms of denizens they refused loans to

the both: absolutely wreckless un-patriotic and: un-accounted for actions, acting without any accountability
