Why are there volunteer fire departments in Fairfax County?
Posted by: HET ()

Can someone explain the difference between the volunteer fire departments and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. Do they work at different times? Do they share equipment? Why do they exist if we are already paying for full time professional fire fighters?

Good question. The average pay for a ffx country fire fighter is about $100k.

Again with this anti volunteer rhetoric? Nice try troll.

Fairfax is a combination fire system. Looking it up on the internet.

No it isn't. Professionals are on 24 hours a day. Prince William is a combination system: their professionals only work 6-6 M-F. So again, why does Fairfax need/have both?

The Volunteers left in the county help to defray the cost of Equipment and Stations and help with staffing. They do fundraisers (Bingo and Mailouts) and purchase equipment (been a while but most Vehicles not Red and White where purchased by the volunteer departments.), the County provides the staffing and Maintenance. Prince William is now where Fairfax was 30 years ago with the Call Volume increasing the need for 24/7 staffing, Volunteers at Most PW stations staff 6p-6a and career staff during the day while people work. Either way you go a good portion of Career Staff in Fairfax and elsewhere are Volunteers or where in the places they live so its pretty moronic when the Career / Volunteer bashing goes on.

as for the Average Salary being 100k Starting Pay is about 50k, work 56 hour work weeks, factor in overtime and cost of living raises, night supplemental, advanced skills, Paramedic and you can make 100K in a short time but it will take your health over the long term as well as being exposed to the toxins around the station and on calls.

Thanks. So even if the station down the street has VFD trucks, it is still mostly professional employees?

What we really need is more volunteers at the County Asshole Treatment Center.

The station is staffed 24/7 by career staff but have more people than most county station since they also have Active Volunteers as well. open house is the second week of October, might be worthwhile to go in and see it that Saturday to get a better idea of how the system works.

Any volunteer units around Seven Corners or Hybla Valley? If there are, great, but I'd be surprised.

It goes way, way, back to before there was a professional fire department.

The VFDs had, and have political drag so a deal was made to have both.

Of course you'd have to be older than 14 to know that.

Faifax County Fire and Rescue has been around since 1949. I'll let the snarky comment slide because you're obviously old and senile.

The closest volunteer fire station to Hybla Valley would be Greater Springfield (station 22) or Franconia (Station 5). There is also Lorton (Station 19) but I don't believe they are accepting operational members at this time.
Check out their websites for info on joining and good luck.

Both volunteering and working full time in Fairfax is a fucking joke.

On one hand, if you didn't grow up here, or are a special "minority" (read: not a straight, White male.) you aren't getting hired on full time.

On the other, if you can't do Bingo Night, you can't volunteer.

Lol...ok. Former USMC, combat arms. Spent almost 15 years after that contracting overseas, half of which were in a medic role.

Ok...whatever...decided to grow up and get a degree. Couldn't get full time work as the former, because I'm not black, and don't suck dick. No big deal, I'll volunteer when I'm not in class or working, because I have a shit ton of real world medical experience to offer.

Sorry...no bingo means no go.

Piss off. About to graduate, six figure plus job offers rolling in.

Fuck this place. Really.

Bye.

You sound like a whiny little bitch. This kind of attitude is the reason you can't get into any department either volley or paid.

They were brainwashed into thinking they are the greatest of the great. Protecting freedom blah blah blah....... a Former Marine is almost as bad as a blood sucking liberal wanting free shit thinking everything is owed to them. If you cant do Join. Lets face it, most of them are slightly retarded considering they had to join the military to make something of their life.

There is no difference between paid and volley in the county. Neither off them do anything. Low call volume and no action. Nothing but a bunch of cocky pussies. TYFYS

Rural areas... volunteer fire and EMS is a necessity. No way rural counties can pay for enough career folks for rapid response times. As the DC metro has crept outwards, the valuable volunteer agencies have been outpaced by the high increase in call volume, which is why career staff eventually has mostly taken over. Volunteers have to meet the same training and certification requirements that career staff do. Generally volunteers in Fairfax would be BLS providers and probably during evening shifts.

56 hour work week and 20 of it is spent sleeping; 3 working out and at least 10 doing nothing.
