I'm new to the are and just wondering what people think of the place.

If your kid is a baseball player it's a great place.

The school caters the the athletic/popular students. I think the counselors act like they are back in high school. They are so busy trying to be popular they do little to help the kids. God help you if your kid needs help. You won't get any from them.

I don't think it's any better or any worse than any other area high school. But I hope you are not basing your decision on what you find here on this board. It's primarily just a bunch of local residents saying smart ass things to each other. You'll find very little of value here.

It has a more "hometown" feel to it. I think because it is more on the smaller side compared to others around here. Smaller student body so everyone pretty much knows each other. It was known as the party school when I went there. Easy to score weed and x. We would load up the trunk with booze and party a little at lunch in the back lot before all the trailers were put in. Nobody gave a shit about any sport (including Baseball) but football. The team was good back then though. The counselors suck, esp. Mrs. Bates but the administrators actually care. Your kid is less likely to fall through the cracks at Madison.

Madison posted gains this year in all three parts of the SAT, putting it back in the top 5 or 6 of FCPS high schools. It's a good school with mostly good kids and a few really good teachers. The administration is like every other administration in FCPS, overpaid and doing dumb work. Fortunately, they do little to mess up teaching there.

Both my kids have had an excellent experience at Madison, challenged by the course work and finding help from concerned teachers when they struggled. AP History was a tough one for my oldest, and the teacher is really awesome-truly a college 101 course and very demanding.
Merrill is a quality administrator--in all my dealings with him, I'd say he was fair and engaged in the issue. Thats not to say he tells you what you want to hear. Plus, he's everywhere--games, performances, etc. Clearly an 18 hr/day guy.
Every school has it's whiners--and Vienna has tons of em--both Madison and Oakton. Disregard em. They're fools.

There are some shit teachers and I know way too many kids who do drugs and teachers turn a blind eye not reporting them when they are high in their class and instead just ask them if they are and not actually report them.

There are also a lot of great people I just hate when I am told to help another student and the fucker doesnt know the different between centimeters and meters and is a fucking senior. I can't wait to fucking leave.
