Dunbar Teacher Handcuffed, Questioned by Metro Transit Police in Front of Her Students

In a case of mistaken identity, Metro Transit Police handcuffed and questioned a D.C. teacher in front of her students for a crime the students did not commit.

Brandi Byrd took 15 history students from Dunbar High School to the Holocaust Museum. After getting off a train at Mount Vernon Square on their way back to school, the students were shocked to see their teacher pushed against a wall.

"I’m like, 'That’s a woman. Why are you being so aggressive with her?'" Carlton Green said.

Byrd couldn’t believe it either. "I’ve never been held against my will anywhere," she said.

Metro police said they were responding to a report of an assault, and the students matched the description.

“I told him. I identified who I was,” Byrd said. "'I’m a teacher. These are my students. We’re returning from a field trip.'"

But police held her for 20 minutes, and students recorded the incident on their cellphones.

"At no point did the gentleman who put me in handcuffs tell me why I was in handcuffs," she said.

He only said she was being detained because of an active investigation, Byrd said.

Byrd became agitated and disorderly while police tried to figure out who the kids were, Metro officials said, but Byrd denied being any kind of threat and said police went too far by putting her in cuffs.

Police let the group go when they figured out it was not the group they wanted.

Byrd feels violated and said it still hurts where the metal handcuffs were clamped around her wrists.

A high school teacher in the nation's capital was pushed against a wall and slammed into handcuffs at a subway station while on a field trip with her students.

"Record this, because I haven't done anything," Brandi Byrd tells her history class as she is manhandled by a Washington Metro Transit officer at an underground train stop near Dunbar High School in the city's Northwest district.

She and 15 students had just returned from a visit this week to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, near the Smithsonian Institution, on the National Mall.

Byrd, the mother of a 4-month-old, was detained for 20 minutes as classmates held up their mobile phones and captured the event.

"I'm like, 'That's a woman, why are you being so aggressive with her?''' student Carlton Green told WRC-TV.

Metro police said the officer was responding to an assault report, and that the students matched the suspects’ descriptions.

"At no point did the gentleman who put me in handcuffs tell me why I was in handcuffs," she told the station.

Metro officials said Byrd was agitated and disorderly when officers tried to determine the identities of her students.

Byrd denied that, saying police were out of line to restrain her with handcuffs.

Good call on the teacher's part. If the police really thought the students were part of some armed robbery, why didn't they frisk them too? Something smells here and it's the cops.

Absolutely outrageous - and terrible PR. Just imagine if you had been treated like that. I can't imagine how the cop could justify handcuffing a teacher in front of her students. I hope she sues.

Actually it looks like she cooperated with him and he got rough with her. Good thing the students filmed it. Looks like they got ALOT out of that field trip. That whole city's gone to shit. Can't even rely on the fire department to come to the rescue when you've got a heart attack!

I am a middle aged white male professional. I gave the cops attitude. I was cuffed, knocked down, arrested, and spent two nights in jail. All charges were subsequently dropped. Cops are just bullies with a gun. Better to swallow your pride for 20 minutes than to get righteous and spend time in jail. They have all the power, they are liars, and you have almost no recourse. I can understand black anger toward the police. Staying out of trouble isn't enough.
