Security breach at National Airport

Kudos to the TSA for letting someone pass thru security with a handgun... at an airport where one would expect security to be highly trained and extra vigilant...

I just wonder how often this happens at other airports. Yikes.

THat is pretty bad. They just let anybody screen those items? Why is it up to 1 monkey to save hundreds of lives

What if the guy didnt come back to say he had a gun?

Clearly this guy was not a threat. However, it should be clear to anyone paying attention that the 'security' the government provides you is nothing but smoke and mirrors.

Actually when landing into National, if anyone gets up when decending to the airport, they are authroized to devert the plane. I always fly from national.

I guess now they'll need to figure out what they should do if the person getting up has a gun on them!

(i always try to fly out of national too... much better airport than that monstrosity out to the west)

Is that rule still in effect? They USED to make the announcement 30 minutes out, but in the dozen or 18 times that I've flown into DCA in the past year I haven't heard it. I guess I was too busy hitting on the hottie in the next seat over. Something like that.

They don't enforce that rule anymore

I've flown out of DCA about 30 times over the past year, and i've heard it over half of them. The last time i flew back in, they made the annoucment.

Your right, they don't always announce it, but it's still in effect.

The TSA suspended the rule in 2005. Maybe certain airlines still do it on their own, but they are no longer required to do it by law.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Here is a summons and a fine.

Next time the guy should keep his mouth shut.

The security screening process has always been a joke to anyone with a brain. Now even more so.

heh, i know of a security screener at dulles that doesn't watch the screen, saying that if anything happens he'll "see it on the news"

course it could just be my friend who works for TSA making shit up.

Not me. The govt. already hires enough dumbasses. I can think of few things more foolish and irresponsible than mistakenly carrying a gun onto an airplane. The fact that he turned himself in clearly demonstrates that he knew that his actions were wrong, yet he was still dumb enough to do it.

No way I'd hire this guy. He's just as bad as the lazy screener that failed to catch him.

You guys do know that TSA tests screeners, i heard a figure of like 3,000 testers at random airports daily.

They said a majority of them do get through, but once they do. They show the screener what they missed.

National isn't so bad for security checks. Damn Dulles is a nightmare. At least it is my experience.
