With all the property tax revenue coming in from the new houses and the mattress stores, Vienna is still flush with cash.

Vienna's property tax revenues continue to increase, but the mattress store population is declining.

Meanwhile, the issue here is not with cost increases resulting from actual change orders, but rather with cost increases resulting from stupid blunders by incompetent private sector contractors. So much for all that private sector ingenuity and efficiency malarkey, I guess.

We developers can do anything we want in Vienna...we own the town council...

In the real world, developers complain about how tough Vienna is when compared to the County.

You've said that before...always rising to defend the builders and developers must be tiring work...

Someone may have. As for me, I'm all for holding the builders' feet to the fire. Thanks to local government, people in the area can work for a better deal. Cut out the bad, add in the good. More places should have incorporated back in the day.

The sad fact is that demolishing Marco Polo and building a Chick-fil-A is a step up for Vienna.

The Vienna Town Council on Feb. 22 agreed to appropriate $620,000 from the town’s reserves to cover increased costs for the Vienna Community Center’s renovation-and-expansion project, but only after expressing concern about the cost overruns’ magnitude.

Quote

“Whoever was the engineer on this job didn’t do it very well,” he said. “Three-quarters of a million [dollars] on a $10 million or $11 million [project] is a significant piece of money. I’m hoping when we contract out the police station and other projects, we’re a little smarter.” [\quote]

7.2% cost overrun? The fucking government dreams about numbers that low.

Also, Vienna is relatively reasonable to develop in, try Arlington County or the City of Alexandria.

Vienna peaked in the 70s. With the new, mostly goddamned gawdawful houses going up everywhere, you might as well file Vienna away as "used to be a nice place to live"

DOn't get me started about the Gestapos in Drag looking for revenue on every street corner.

I hope the Town of Vienna doesn't have to sell the Town Green to pay its bills.

Why would Vienna ever sell the Town Green? It is the most attractive part of the town.

Raise taxes on the mattress stores. Those bastards run the town and bleed northern Virginia dry anyway. They should contribute to their localities. We have allowed them to have a monopoly on our sleep they can at the very least give a little back.
