Curtis LeMay's fire-bombing raid on Tokyo actually killed more people than either A-bomb.

Progressives in Japan made some inroads after the ascension of Hirohito in 1926, but push-back from the ultra-right wing was fierce and led to what became a reprehensible era of expansionism and super-nationalism. War was inevitable as the result. Bilaterally, the US was made an object of hatred for having passed the Japanese Exclusion Act in 1924, and things simply got worse from there.

The dropping of those bombs saved more Japanese lives than American lives.

Japanese lives didn't count for much at the time. LeMay only cared about two things -- hitting his targets, and getting as many of his planes and crews back in one piece as he could.
