School teachers?

Why don't teachers have to use vacation days or go without pay on snow days like the rest of us? Why aren't they required to do work like the rest of adults in the county? I don't understand why they complain incessantly when they are on holiday for weeks on end. When I look at FCPS pay grade, they get paid a lot more per hour than most in private sector. I don't understand why the people I pay for as a Fairfax County taxpayer get far better pay and benefits than me.... and then complain incessantly about how awful their work is. I'd give anything to get that pay for doing such little work per hour.

Sick and tired of paying Fairfax County taxes while fcps employees stay home in warmth of their home day after day.

We're salaried employees, dawg. If we miss too many days, we're making that time up later without getting paid anything extra. Besides, I'm working during the snow days, and I'm sure a lot of my colleagues are as well.

I don't know where people get the idea that we don't do all that much work. I'm contracted for 40 hours a week but I work at least 50; students come at 8:10 but I'm there at 6:30 (at the latest) scrambling to grade and plan. People I know who don't come in that early stay at least that late. I'm not complaining, though; I really like my job a whole lot. I don't stay too late myself, but I do take a lot of work home.

Looking at the salary schedule gives me the willies, too, mainly because I'm a little worried about whether I'll be able to continue to support my growing family without getting a third job. Folks I know that have as many degrees as I do and don't teach make significantly more that I make. That's OK, though. Again, I'm not complaining. I really love my job.

I'm a Fairfax County taxpayer, too, and I'd rather my money were going toward keeping FCPS standards high enough that surrounding counties (with more funding) still regarded us as "excellent," but we're slipping. Arlington, Falls Church, and Loudoun all outrank us. Loudoun, people. You'd think we'd be at least well-funded enough to keep pace with freaking Loudoun.

fcps is well-funded enough to keep pace. It is the management of that funding which needs to be held to account.

Teachers do the job parents refuse to do. You imagine trying to teach a bunch of kids whose parents hate them and are too stupid, lazy and self absorbed to take responsibility of their own child and home school them. There is only one reason to send your child to public school. It's punishment.

Now, if you vote for liberals you have created this society where everybody must bitch and moan and do as little of work as possible to get the same things hard working and smart people earn.

Most FCPS employees are happy, they just don't like that they are paid so much less than other counties. I worked for FCPS for 5 years before taking a job in Arlington. I'm going to make about 275,000 more dollars in my career because I switched counties.

If you want good teachers you have to have Competitive pay, which at the moment FCPS does not.

I agree so much with your FIRST SENTENCE. They do the job parents refuse to do.
I see so many kids, especially with the changing demographics, that control there parents. It supposed to be the other way around.

I don't know why people can't understand that teachers are paid a salary, not by the hour.

I have done tons of work for school since the snow started. I brought my laptop home and have had time to really sit and plan and look at resources online and reflect on what is happening in my class. I rarely have a block of time to do that. On top of that, I have worked on grades, IEP progress notes, and a lot of other paperwork. I have put in at least 3 hours a day, if not more.

If you don't teach, or live with a teacher, you don't get it.

And I know that most of my students are not picking up a book or practicing any math facts while they are home. We will have to review a lot before moving on to get everything in before the SOLs. The kids will all tell me that they didn't have time over the days off to do any kind of maintenance skill work, because most of them have parents that can't make them.

But I do love my job. However, I have looked at the Arlington pay scale and am seriously considering retiring from FCPS and going there. I have a family to provide for.

If you want them back in school perhaps you could shovel the snow off the sidewalks and crosswalks so the schools can open sooner.

So go back to Dustburg and be a dirt farmer. Nobody needs your sorry ass here. Nobody will miss you when you go. It's quite clear that the only thing you are contributing to around here is the level of noise pollution.

No, they are not at all. FCPS was once the unquestioned leader in these parts, but the system has been gouged by both the county and the state for a decade. We are forever falling further behind at this point. Programs are slipping, class sizes are growing, out best teachers and admins are leaving for better pay and working conditions in nearby jurisdictions. Our schools have long been the foundation of our economic growth and prosperity in Fairfax County. Unless we reverse course and start putting money back into the system instead of trying to suck money out, we will fall by the wayside in terms of being a desirable place for businesses and well-paid jobs and workers to relocate to. Wake up before it's too late!

Home-schooling is like fantasy football. It can seem real, but it isn't.

It's already too late. Fairfax parents are choosing private schools or moving to N. Arlington or Falls Church.

No, the contract hours for a full-time teacher are 37.5 hours / week.

That plus 30 minutes for lunch every day =
.
.
.
wait for it
.
.
.
40 hours / week.

The lunch is technically not paid time, so administrators cannot demand teachers have hall duty, etc., during that time.

Like most public sector workers -- and as we have seen in this very thread -- teachers are underpaid due to a generic assumption that they have higher "psychic income" in their work than most people do. Most people after all make poor decisions and end up being trapped in careers of life-long drudgery that they resent and detest. Teachers on the other hand (and those similarly situated) are doing something that they value and enjoy. That's clearly an important thing, but it can only go so far, We have been cheap enough long enough now with FCPS that we are pushing ourselves well beyond that very dangerous point of starting to earn negative returns. This train needs to be put back on the track, and that needs to happen quickly.

How would such things make it "too late"? After all, early detection and treatment of any cancer will improve the patient's prognosis. We simply need to put FCPS back on a rational funding system. The problem isn't immigrants or too many administrators -- it's being given NOT ENOUGH MONEY to do the job properly.

So what I take from this is you're a fucking idiot that can't get a job as a teacher and are jealous while you work at some blue collar job outdoors.

If you're going to go Tea Bagger, live by Tea Bagger 'ideals'.
Pull up your bootstraps and work harder!
You should be able to make it to at least school janitor.
