An active shooter has been reported at a building at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, the facility reported Tuesday morning.
The medical center posted on its Facebook page shortly after 8 a.m. local time that an active shooter had been reported in a building at the facility.
“All occupants are advised to run, hide or fight,” the message stated.
Non-emergency personnel were urged to stay away from the facility.
Military police contacted the San Diego Police Department shortly after 8 a.m. and told them that shots were fired at the installation, but the local police department was not asked for its assistance, a spokesman said.
“They told us when they called in that we’re not needed at this time,” Officer Travis Easter, a San Diego police spokesman, said in a telephone interview.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has also not been called for any help, according to Lee Swanson, a spokesman.
The medical center has a staff of more than 6,500 people, including military, civilians, contractors and volunteers, according to its site. The facility spans 1.2 million square feet in the city’s Balboa Park, and on an average day there are thousands of patient visits for medical or dental treatment.
